Grounds Maintenance (13-44)

Grounds Maintenance


Performs assigned tasks in the execution of campus landscaping and grounds maintenance operations; acts as crew lead man, performing such tasks and concurrently supervising other members of the crew as are required for execution of the project(s) assigned to the crew.  Other responsibilities include, but are not limited

  • Mows lawns and playing fields
  • Aerates, trims, and edges lawn areas and playing fields
  • Performs general groundskeeping: planting, watering, fertilizing, and pruning cover, shrubs, and trees
  • Performs maintenance of streets, walks, and parking lots:  sweeping, blowing, patching asphalt, emptying trashcans, policing of trash and debris
  • Performs maintenance of streets, walks, and parking lots: sweeping, blowing, patching asphalt, emptying trashcans, policing of trash and debris
  • Performs maintenance of storm drains, ditches, and ponds
  • Performs pre-, during, and post-operation maintenance of equipment and makes minor repairs as necessary
  • Applies herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides to lawns, groundcover, shrubs, and trees
  • Performs duties as lead groundskeeper on independent projects and/or team projects with a groundskeeper   


State Requirements: Experience in grounds maintenance, housekeeping, or pest control work that is directly related to the area of employment


FMU Preferences:  High school graduate plus 2-4 years experience in grounds maintenance desired, or the equivalent in education, training, and experience.  Prior grounds experience preferred.  Must have knowledge of and experience in applying herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, irrigation of lawns, plants, shrubbery, trees, etc.  Must be able to drive a tractor and truck, and operate standard transmission and small engine machinery.  Flexibility/strength/stamina to bend, stoop, or lean over, around, or under obstacles while performing work.  Must be able to see well enough to read chemical labels accurately in various lighting conditions and to operate equipment safely at normal speeds of production.  Must be able to hear well enough to operate equipment safely while being aware of subtle sound cues from other traffic and from equipment being operated.  *Valid SC Drivers License Required. 


Normal Working Hours: 7:00am-3:00pm, 30-minute lunch, Monday-Friday.  Summer Hours may vary.

Salary: $21,697
