For the period 1-10-2015 through 1-29-2015 the following incidents were reported to and/or investigated by Campus Police:
1-11-2015 – Safety Concerns – A resident student reported to Campus Police that she was going to be confronted by another student in regards to a previous relationship. Campus Police officers were able to talk to both students and direct them to stay away from each other until they heard from Student Affairs.
1-12-2015 – Drugs – While conducting a routine walkthrough of Watson Hall, officers smelled marijuana coming from a student’s room. After being invited in, the student was advised what constructive possession was and the ramifications of having marijuana on campus. While discussing enforcement actions, three more students walk into the room and these newcomers also smelled like marijuana had just been used. While talking to those students, officers noticed one student appeared to be choking. The student had swallowed marijuana and was having such trouble swallowing that he almost fell on the floor. Officers were able to get him to sit down where the student admitted he swallowed marijuana. One student arrested for marijuana possession and several students referred to Housing and Student Affairs for policy violations.
1-12-2015 – Warrants – A Campus Police officer noticed a student who active Florence city Police Department arrest warrants. The student was escorted to the Campus Police office where a City of Florence Police Officer picked him up and served the warrants before taking the student to the Florence County Detention Center.
1-18-2015 – Trespassing – A Campus Police officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. The officer was familiar with the driver, a non-student, through previous law enforcement contacts. The driver was on the University’s trespass list, was arrested for trespassing after notice and taken to jail. The passengers of the vehicle were all non-students and were directed to depart campus.
1-20-2015 – Warrant – A current student had an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in General Sessions Court. As the student was leaving class he was asked to accompany Campus Police officers to the Campus Police building. He was transported to the Florence County Courthouse where he was able to obtain a new court date and avoid being jailed.
1-20-2015 – Drugs/Gun – A Campus Police officer stopped a commuter student for driving without his headlights on and failing to stop at a stop sign. After noticing marijuana in the car the officer asked the student to step out. The student was asked about drugs in the car and admitted there was marijuana blunt in the car. While attempting to pat down the student for any weapons the student kept reaching towards his waistline. A handgun dropped to the ground from his pants leg. The student was arrested for several weapons and drug violations and taken to jail. The student was also referred to Student Affairs.
1-23-2015 – Recovered Street Sign – A Campus Police officer noticed a student walking to the residence halls with a street sign under his arm. The student claimed he found the sign in an off-campus storage shed and was going to bring it to his room. The officer explained to the student that the sign was the property of a nearby municipality and the ramifications of being in possession of stolen property. The sign was confiscated and returned to the municipality. The student was referred to Student Affairs.
1-27-2015 – Trespass – Campus Police received a tip that a former student currently trespassed from campus was in the UC. Officers responded, arrested the former student for trespassing and transported him to the Florence County Detention Center.
1-27-2015 – Trespass – Shortly after the above case, Campus Police received another tip in regards to another former student on the trespass list. This individual was in the UC gym playing basketball. This individual was arrested for trespassing after notice and transported him to the Florence County Detention Center.
