The Department of English, Modern Languages, and Philosophy is accepting applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in English Education. The department offers three undergraduate degree options, enrolling over 120 students, approximately 50 of whom are in the NCATE-recognized secondary teacher certification program. The department was recently named a South Carolina Teaching Fellows Institution.
Francis Marion University is a state-supported regional university with a strong emphasis on the liberal arts. FMU was recognized by The Chronicle of Higher Education as a "great college to work for" in 2013. With approximately 4,000 undergraduate students, FMU offers small class sizes that encourage strong professional relationships among faculty and students. FMU is located in Florence, SC, a growing city with a vibrant arts culture. Florence is within easy driving distance of beach resorts, such as Myrtle Beach, and areas of historical interest, including Charleston and Savannah.
Qualifications: Doctorate in English, English Education, or closely related field by August 2014. Teaching experience in a secondary school setting and experience teaching first-year writing required.
Additional research and teaching interests in any of the following welcome: language and linguistics, literacy studies, technology and ELA pedagogy, teaching literature in secondary schools, composition/rhetoric, and assessment.
Start Date: August 2014
Teaching Duties: Will supervise field experiences for student teacher candidates and teach courses in secondary ELA methods, advanced composition for teachers, and first-year writing. This position also offers the opportunity to take a leadership role with a local National Writing Project site.
Professional Development: Francis Marion provides generous support for research, including conference travel. Summer research stipends are available on a competitive basis.
