The Department of Psychology, then called the Department of Psychology, Sociology and Philosophy, was one of the original academic departments at the founding of Francis Marion College in 1970. The first department chair, Louis Hoff, hired Gary Hanson in 1971, and Mike Jordan joined him in 1972. Dr. Jordan has spent his entire career at FMU and has received the coveted Distinguished Professor award.

As of Spring 2010, Psychology has 10 faculty members (4 school psychologists, 3 clinical psychologists, and 3 experimental psychologists), 1 full-time administrative associate, and 1 full-time computer lab manager. With 254 undergraduate majors psychology is the fourth most popular major after Biology, Business, and Education. The Psychology Department currently has 39 graduate students enrolled in the Master of Science program in Applied Psychology (Clinical/Counseling and School Psychology options).

Beginning in Fall 2010, the Psychology Department will offer an M.S. degree in Applied Psychology (Clinical/Counseling) and a Specialist in School Psychology Degree (S.S.P.). Students in School Psychology earn a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Applied Psychology en route to the S.S.P. degree, but the School Psychology Option does not offer a terminal M.S. degree in any area.  Students seeking a terminal M.S. degree that will allow licensure or employment in an applied area should consider the Clinical/Counseling Psychology Option.
