Posters about Africa P26POSTERS.jpg
Photo 1999.

These posters behind the front door were not part of the furnishings in Ms. Catherine’s house, but are here to explain the African roots of the people were who lived in these houses.  The people here were the descendants of Africans from hundreds of different ethnic groups, each of which had a cultural heritage that had been developed over many centuries—so these cultures were strong and resilient.  Africans brought that cultural heritage to South Carolina, and it was passed on to the people who lived in these houses.  Consequently, the people here had a tremendous cultural resource to sustain them through their years of adversity.  This was the cultural heritage that they contributed to the making of our southern culture.
