Searching for Connections P28CONNECTIONS.jpg
Photo 1999.

Because Mars Bluff is the old name for the area around Francis Marion University, the big map is named "Mars
Bluff Words Are Clues that Point to Various Places in Africa." This map lists words that were used by people in
this area and traces these words to specific ethnic groups in Africa. This attempt to establish even a tenuous connection with specific people in Africa represents a healthy search for the sources of the African heritage of the hewn timber cabin occupants.

Note: More information available from Amelia Wallace Vernon, African Americans at Mars Bluff, South Carolina (Baton Rouge, Louisiana State University, 1993. Reprint. Columbia: University of South Carolina, 1995), pp. 156-172.

Copy of map is from George Peter Murdock, Africa: Its Peoples and their Culture History (New York: McGraw Hill, 1959), map is in pocket of book noted above.
