2013 Student Teach / Senior Internship requirements

If you plan to Student Teach (or complete a Senior Internship) in Spring 2013 or Fall 2013, please be aware of the following REQUIREMENTS:

 

Entrance Requirements for Clinical Practice (EDUC 490/491):

Professional School of Education Admission Standards:  Being accepted into the Clinical Practice indicates that the candidate has:

  • Been officially admitted to the Professional Education program at least one full semester prior to the student teaching semester.
  • Followed all procedures for student teaching as outlined on News and Announcements and/or as posted outside of the office of the Coordinator of Clinical Experiences.
  • Earned a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.50 at the end of the semester prior to student teaching.
  • Maintained a "C" or better in all education courses.
  • Received a positive recommendation from public school personnel and course instructors in the pre-student teaching block(s).
  • Received an acceptable disposition rating from instructors and supervisors in the pre-student teaching block(s).
  • Received and submitted an EXAMINEE copy of passing scores on all required parts of the Praxis II (Subject Assessments/Specialty Area Tests and Principles of Learning and Teaching Tests) BY Reading Day the semester prior to student teaching.
  • Received the recommendation of the appropriate program committee.
  • Completed the South Carolina Department of Education Application for Educator Certificate (including background check and fingerprinting) and received approval by the state of same.
  • Successfully completed ALL Education courses, except for the Clinical Practice Block of Education 487 (a two-hour course) and Education 489 (a one hour course).
  • Attended one of the two Mandatory Orientation meetings conducted by the Coordinator of Clinical Experiences (held during the Advising Period the semester prior to student teacher); and
  • Submitted a complete and thorough Student Teaching Application Packet by Reading Day the semester prior to student teaching.

 

Praxis Information:

· All Praxis II & PLT scores have to be received by Reading Day prior to the semester you plan to Student Teach.

 

  • Spring 2013- The Reading Day deadline to Student Teach in Spring 2013 is December 4, 2012 by 5pm. This means that the last scheduled Praxis exam that you can take in order for your scores to be received in the School of Education by Reading Day is September 22, 2012. Scores for you to submit with your application will be available for you to download on October 16, 2012 for Multiple Choice and October 23, 2012 for Essay.

 

  • Fall 2013- The Reading Day deadline to Student Teach in Fall 2013 is April 23, 2013 by 5pm. This means that the last scheduled Praxis exam that you can take in order for your scores to be received in the School of Education by Reading Day is January 26, 2013. Scores for you to submit with your application will be available for you to download on February 19, 2013 for Multiple Choice exam and February 26, 2013 for Essay.

 

* Remember: Your application MUST contain an official paper copy (Examinee Copy) of the scores, and we cannot accept scores verbally.*

 

· Go to: http://www.ets.org/praxis for more information.

 

*Copies of Praxis scores will no longer be made in the School of Education Office. Make sure when you receive your scores via email from ETS, you print out a copy for your own records.*

Fingerprinting:

If you are planning on Student Teaching for Fall 2013, the fingerprinting session will be held on Thursday January 24, 2013 in CEMC 212B from 11am to 4pm.

And if you are planning on Student Teaching for Spring 2014, the fingerprinting session will be held on Thursday April 4, 2013 in CEMC 212B from 11am to 4pm.

There will be a sign-up sheet in the School of Education, Room 212.  Please see Mrs. Caroline Watts, Director of Teacher Certification.  The sign-up sheet will be available 2 weeks prior to the session. Once you have signed up for a fingerprinting session, please register at www.http://scteachers.ed.sc.gov/cert/certpdf/livescanproceduresweb.pdf . On the L-1 Enrollment website, you will sign up for a time and pay for your session. The fee for fingerprinting is $51.50.

Also, you will need to visit the South Carolina Department of Education website http://ed.sc.gov/ and fill out the online application of teacher certification. This will need to be done BEFORE turning in your Notice of Intent. You can find the application under the “I am a Teacher” section and labeled “Certification” on the state website. Follow the application process and also pay the application fee of $105.00.

REMEMBER: You will need to bring 2 forms of identification (one must be your Social Security Card) and any print out receipts! If you have any questions about the fingerprinting process or the Application for Teacher Certification, please contact Mrs. Watts in CEMC 212 or call her at 661-1470.

 

Notice of Intent to Student Teach:

In order to help pre-qualify a candidate for student teaching, Candidates will submit a Notice of Intent to Student Teach to Mrs. Caroline Watts (CEMC 212). This will give the office of the Coordinator of Clinical Experiences the opportunity help ensure that candidates are on track and ready to proceed.   This form is required for both student teaching (EDUC 490) and the senior internship (EDUC 491).

For candidates planning to complete his/her clinical practice (EDUC 490/491) in Spring 2013:  Please download and submit the form by 5:00 pm on Friday, October 19th, 2012.

For candidates planning to complete his/her clinical practice (EDUC 490/491) in Fall 2013:  Please download and submit the form by 5:00 pm on Friday, March 22nd, 2013.

 

MANDATORY Clinical Practice/Student Teaching Orientation

REQUIRED for anyone wishing to complete his/her clinical practice (EDUC 490/491) and failure to attend will delay clinical practice until a subsequent semester. 

For candidates planning to complete his/her clinical practice (EDUC 490/491) in Spring 2013:  The mandatory Orientation for Clinical Practice will be held on Monday, October 29th, 2012 from 3:00pm - 4:00pm in CEMC 225 OR Tuesday, October 30th, 2012 from 3:30pm - 4:30pm in CEMC 225. Attendance at one of these meetings is mandatory and a signup sheet will be available outside of the Coordinator of Clinical Experiences office (CEMC 212A) the week of October 15th. Important information will be distributed and discussed, so no late admittance will be allowed. Failure to attend will result in a candidate not meeting student teaching requirements.

For candidates planning to complete his/her Clinical Practice (EDUC 490/491) in Fall 2013:  The mandatory Orientation for Clinical Practice will be held on Monday, April 1st, 2013 from 3:00pm - 4:00pm in CEMC 225 OR Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013 from 3:30pm - 4:30pm in CEMC 225. Attendance at one of these meetings is mandatory and a signup sheet will be available outside of the Coordinator of Clinical Experiences office (CEMC 212A) the week of March 18th. Important information will be distributed and discussed, so no late admittance will be allowed. Failure to attend will result in a candidate not meeting student teaching requirements.

 

Application process:

Candidates wishing to complete his/her clinical practice in Spring 2013 must submit a complete and thorough application packet on or before 5:00 pm on December 4, 2012.

Candidates wishing to complete his/her clinical practice in Fall 2013 must submit a complete and thorough application packet on or before 5:00 pm on April 23, 2013.

The application MUST include the following according to the directions discussed at one of the Mandatory Orientation Meetings:
