with E-Mail at FMU (Pine)
Getting Signed On
to ALPHA1
You must have an
ALPHA1 userid to use any email program on
ALPHA1. You have two choices of email
programs on ALPHA1 - PINE or VMS MAIL.
Your userid is the first four letters of your last name combined
with the last four numbers of your Social Security number. Your email address will be your userid combined with the “@” character and the university’s
domain name which is fmarion.edu.
For example:
My name is Bugs Bunny
and my SS# is 123-45-6789
My User id : Bunn6789
My Email address : Bunn6789@fmarion.edu
Alternative Email address : Bunn6789@Alpha1.fmarion.edu
To access the ALPHA1,
you will be required to enter a password after entering your userid. The first
time you access the ALPHA1, your password will USER.
You will be prompted at this time to enter a new password and to verify
it. This will be your password the next
time you use the ALPHA1. The password
must be at least 6 characters and no more that 32, and should consist of
letters and numbers.
First time signing on
to ALPHA1:
UserID Bunn 6789
Password User
New Password Carrots
Verify Carrots
Note: Your password will not appear on the screen
for your safety. Please remember your
password. If you forget it you must go
to the Academic Computer Center main office and have it reset. There may be a 24 hour waiting period for
passwords to be reset. To change your
password at a later date, enter the command SET PASSWORD and follow the
instructions on the screen.
REMEMBER: Your password will be the newpassword
from now on.
Next time signing on
to ALPHA1:
UserID Bunn6789
Password Carrots
Signing on to ALPHA1
Click on the icon Telnet to
Alpha1 or at your Telnet prompt enter the machine name of ALPHA1.FMARION.EDU
and press enter
Type your userid
and press enter
Type in your password and press
enter.
Getting Started
with Pine on ALPHA1
Pine is a text-based,
menu-driven mail program. You can enter the
letter or symbol of the command you want.
Certain features require the Ctrl key to be pressed along with the
letter. When you see ^ this means press
the ctrl key along with the letter following it to initiate the command.
Sign on to the ALPHA1
with your userid
At the $ prompt, type
PINE to start the Pine Mail program
You will see the
following menu for pine

To Compose and
Send Messages
Press C to compose a message. You will see
the following screen.

You will be required
to fill in the To: prompt. This prompt should contain the email address
of the recipient of the message being composed.
The other prompts are optional.
The Cc: prompt is
where to send copies. The Attchmnt: prompt is
the name of an attached file.
Please remember that attached files must be on the ALPHA1. The recommendation is for files to be of ASCII (DOS Text)
type. The Subject: prompt is where a
brief description of
the message to the recipient . Press enter after entering the
information or simply
press enter to skip an option. Type your
message in the message area. Then press Control X to send the
message. To cancel the message press
Control C. When composing a message press Control G to access Pine’s on-line help.
When you send a
message you will be prompted by Send message? type Y
When you cancel a
message you will be prompted by Cancel? type Y
To Read New Mail
Messages
Press I to view
messages in current folder INBOX. The
INBOX folder is where new messages will be located. Press the enter key on the
INBOX, then you will see a list of your messages. Use the up or down arrows to select the
message to be read.
To view the next
message press N. To view the previous message type P. To delete a message type D.
NOTE: Please
remember to delete any messages not needed.
You will not be able to send or receive message if your library is full
of old messages. To delete messages,
press D when the message is highlighted or being read.
To Read Old Mail
Messages
Press L and choose the folder MAIL by
highlighting it and pressing enter.
Choose the message to read. To return to the INBOX.
Press L and choose INBOX.
Please remember to
delete old mail message you no longer need by pressing D on the message.
To Exit Pine
Press Q to quit from pine. If you have deleted messages, you will asked to confirm the deletion. You may be asked if you would like messages
moved from on folder to another folder.
You will also be asked to confirm that you want to quit Pine Really quit
pine? type Y.
The following are
samples of question which may be asked when you exit pine.
Really quit pine? type Y
(This makes sure you
wanted to exit pine.)
Save the read message
in “MAIL”? type Y
(This will move a message
from INBOX to MAIL folder.)
Expunge deleted
message from INBOX? type Y
(This deletes the
message from your INBOX folder.
NOTE: Remember to
exit the ALPHA1 by typing
LOGOFF at the $ prompt.
To Create an
Address Book
Press A to create or modify your address
book.
To add an address to
your address book, press A
again. You will be asked to fill in the
following information. Please be aware
you do not have to
type something in every field.
You must enter something in the Adrress field.
Nickname: Should be short with no spaces in the name.
Fullname: Full name to associate with the
address. Can be in
form Last name, First name.
Fcc: Normally
omitted. Where any
copy will go.
Comment: A brief description to help you
remember the address.
Addresses: The actual Email address.
To remove an address
from your address book, press D on
the highlighted address to delete.
To use your address
when composing a message, either press C when in address book or press Control
T when in compose message mode.
