About FMU
Francis Marion University is just outside of Florence, SC. We are about 1.5 hours east of Columbia, SC and only an hour from Myrtle Beach and the famous Grand Strand--well known for its hotels, restaurants, golf courses, theatres, shopping venues and other popular tourist destinations.
HISTORY
Francis Marion University was founded in 1970 and is one of thirteen state-supported public universities in South Carolina. We are named for South Carolina's Revolutionary War hero, General Francis Marion--nicknamed "The Swamp Fox" for using the local marshy terrain to outfox the British. We have about 300 faculty members, most of whom hold doctoral or terminal degrees in their fields.
STUDENT BODY
FMU is home to about 4,000 students, most of whom are residents of South Carolina. About 1,500 students live on campus in residence halls, apartments or our new "Villas." FMU offerst both undergraduate and graduates students enrolled in classes at FMU. Our typical class size is 21 students.
