Dr. Joseph A. James
Professor Emeritus of Modern Languages

Dr. James served Francis Marion University from 1971-1998. As the founding Chairman of Modern Languages, he was instrumental in developing the Modern Languages program at FMU. He received the Ph.D. in Romance Languages from The University of Georgia and specializes in Medieval French literature. Additionally, he studied at the Monterrey Language Institute in California and served as a military intelligence officer in Puerto Rico. Today, Dr. James lives in Florence with his wife, Saleta, a retired teacher from Florence School District One and All Saints' Episcopal Day School. He has two daughters, Almen and Alston.
