Dr. Maria Garcia Otero

B.A. in English Philology from the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain; M.A. in Hispanic Literatures from The University of Kansas; Ph.D. in Medieval and Early Modern Iberia from The University of Kansas.

García Otero´s main area of teaching and research is Medieval and Early Modern Iberia, with focus on hagiography. Before joining the faculty at FMU she taught at The University of Kansas (2005-2011), where she was awarded the Chancellor´s Graduate Teaching Award and the Alva V. Ebersole Award for Outstanding Scholarly Paper in Academic Year 2008-2009.

Thanks to FMU´s  Professional Development and Francis Marion University Summer Research Stipend (FMU, 2012) García Otero travelled to the monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla and Santo Domingo de Silos, and the General Archive of Simancas, Spain, to gather archival documentations and to study the artistic representations of the lives of saints.


She is currently working on two projects: a manuscript on Gonzalo de Berceo´s Vida de San Millán de la Cogolla, and a study of Iberian hagiography in terms of geopolitical hegemony.

In 2009 she developed, with Dr. Margot Versteeg, a summer course for European Studies that took a group of students along the Camino de Santiago. In 2008 she served as teaching instructor and assistant in KU’s summer program in Puebla, Mexico, and Summer Language Institute in Barcelona, Spain.

She is currently developing a Spring semester field trip to Spain (In search of Spain’s Historical Foundations) intended for Spanish majors.

She is a member of the Modern Language Association, the Hagiography Society and the Medieval Association of the Midwest.

García Otero is the founder and director of La Tertulia, a social event to promote the Spanish language among the community.
