Program for Undergraduate Research Experience (P.U.R.E.)
The Department of Biology at FMU strongly encourages student participation in research activities. We offer many opportunities for undergraduates to assist in faculty research or develop their own independent research projects. Students can earn academic credit through Special Studies (BIO 497) and Honors Independent Study (HON 491-499).
Why participate in this program? Research experience benefits YOU. It enhances your college experience, adds to your resume, introduces you to cutting edge scientific techniques, and teaches you how scientists apply classroom concepts in real world investigations. It gives you the opportunity to work closely with your favorite professors, who are experts in their field of research! Perhaps most importantly, it helps you decide whether Biology is a good career choice for you.
The faculty in Biology are engaged in diverse research projects, such as:
· field studies and conservation biology of animals and plants
· the immune responses of crayfish
· genetics and biotechnology
· pollen germination
· animal reproductive biology
· microbial ecology
· and more!
Details of available research positions and the research interests of individual faculty members can be found on the web sites linked from this page.
Each Spring semester we host a P.U.R.E. symposium on campus, where motivated student researchers can present their results. Participation in this symposium is optional. The atmosphere of the symposium is a casual classroom environment, with fellow students and faculty in attendance. It provides a great opportunity to give a scientific presentation, become more comfortable with public speaking, and proudly put forth the results of your research!
If you are interested in research opportunities, please contact Dr. Barbeau or Dr. Pryor, the coordinators of P.U.R.E. We can answer any questions you might have and get you started on a research project!
