The Department of Psychology resides in the Media Center (CEMC), a bright buiding in the heart of the campus near the breezeway and behind the campus The fountain in the center of campusfountain. The psychology department is spread out over two floors. On the main floor is the psychology office The Psychology Officewith eight faculty offices, the front reception area and the administrative assistant. Just down the all is the media center auditorium where the introductory lecture classses are held. This newly remodeled, state-of-the-art facility is a perfect home for the only large, lecture classes in the department. All seats have an excellent view of the screen, are comfortable and roomy. The room boasts excellent acoustics and an impressive sound system.

Upstairs we have four more faculty offices and the computer room which houses our lab manager who keeps track of the roughly 70 computers and assorted printers, projectors and other peripherals.  Most of our classes are held on the second floor and all these classrooms are equipped with SmartBoards, and projectors. We also have a lounge for graduate students and advanced undergraduates. Introductory students take a laboratory class Psy216 which meets in our upstairs seminar room and the 216 Lab which features ten computers in cubicles. We have also remodeled the Rat Lab which once contained cages, food and live mammals. Today the only rodent in the Rat Lab is a mouse attached to a PC. We have 20 computers specially loaded with statistical software (such as SPSS) in addition to regular office and internet applications. This Statistics Lab also has a SmartBoard, Internet connections and a printer. All statistics courses are taught here allowing students to practice the techniques learned in these theory courses. In addition, advanced research design and methods classes meet here to develop and implement empirical, research projects. The second floor also houses the Family Relationships Lab where Drs. Herzog and Hughes conduct research with their students. These labs provide the facilities necessary for conducting resarch that leads to presentations at national and regional professional meetings and publication in refereed journals. Students serve as assistants in some projects and may be the lead researcher in projects they design.

Francis Marion has graduate programs in School and Clinical psychology and we have recently upgraded the Clinical Interview room with equipment that allows us to record interview sessions and transfer these recodings to DVD's. Professors can watch from behind a one-way window that looks like a mirror from the other side. This can be done with a stationary camera as well as one that moves to allow the study of facial expressions and non-verbal cues. The interview room is also equipped with "bug-in-the-ear" technology that permits faculty to communicate with students during the interview. All of this equimpent is, of course, explained to the interviewee and used only with his or her permission.
