Writing Center Workshop Series
The Writing Center Workshops Series provides students with opportunities to learn more about common writing problems and strategies for addressing them in their written projects.

The Writing Center Workshop Series provides students with opportunities to learn about a variety of writing-related topics, including information about basic writing skills, research papers, documentation formats, and employment materials. Each interactive presentation is designed to equip students with the skills they need to succeed at writing tasks in academic and professional environments. Students interested in attending any of these workshops can visit the Writing Center, located in FH 114-C, or call 661-1528 for more information. All workshops will be held in the Lowrimore Auditorium (CEMC 114). No reservation is required. Faculty will be notified of their students' attendance at these workshops.

Avoiding Plagiarism—Wednesday, January 16, at 2:30 p.m.
Plagiarism is an offense that can result in serious academic and professional consequences.  Learn what it is and how to avoid it. 

Making a Good First Impression: Writing Introductions—Tuesday, January 22, at 2:15 p.m.
Learn some new strategies to grab your readers’ attention at the beginning of your academic papers! 

 

Writing Effective PowerPoints—Wednesday, January 30, at 2:30 p.m.
Do you need to learn how to make your PowerPoint presentations more persuasive, unique, and informative?  Come to this workshop to learn tips for PowerPoint success!

 

Writing Effective Essay Exams—Tuesday, February 5, at 2:15 p.m.
Do essay exams leave you feeling exasperated?  Preparing for Praxis?  Pick up some strategies to learn how to prepare for an essay exam and organize your responses! 

 

Cross-referencing: Using MLA Format—Wednesday, February 13, at 2:30 p.m.
Discover the purpose for using MLA documentation, and pick up strategies for creating parenthetical citations and a Works Cited page.

 

Transitions: Polishing Paragraphs—Tuesday, February 19, at 2:15 p.m.
Trying to avoid choppy writing and abrupt topic shifts?  Learn strategies for smoothly guiding your reader from paragraph to paragraph.

 

Documenting Sources: Using APA Format—Wednesday, February 27, at 2:30 p.m.
Explore the purposes for using APA documentation, as well as learn methods for using parenthetical citations and a reference page.

 

Research and the Internet—Tuesday, March 4, at 2:15 p.m.
If used correctly, the Internet can be a great tool for research.  However, many Internet sources lack accuracy and credibility.  Find out how to conduct productive academic web searches in this session.

 

Improving Style—Wednesday, March 19, at 2:30 p.m. 
Are you trying to make your writing more engaging for your readers? Learn how to address questions of word choice, information order, and conciseness in your writing.

 

Writing Your Resume—Tuesday, March 25, at 2:15 p.m.
Will you be looking for a job in May?  Getting ready for the Job Fair on April 9?  If so, you need to start developing your resume now.  Learn how to write a resume that will show your strengths and attract employers. 

 

The Punctuation Puzzle: Semi-colons, Colons, Dashes, & Apostrophes—Wednesday, April 9, at 2:30 p.m.
What do you do with all of those punctuation keys on your keyboard?  Learn how to use them wisely and

effectively.
