Alumni Member Appreciation and Recognition Dinner

A special appreciation dinner is held in February for all Alumni Association members.  At this event, the three Distinguished Alumni Awards are presented: the Outstanding Alumnus Award, the Benjamin Wall Ingram, III Young Alumnus Award, and the Alumni Volunteer of the Year Award.  This dinner has become our most attended and anticipated event.  It is a true depiction of Patriot Pride at its best!

Alumni Assocation Phone-A-Thon

In an effort to increase the number of dues paying alumni  in the Alumni Association's membership program, the Office of Alumni Affairs and the Student Alumni Association (SAA) coordinate and sponsor a Phone-A-Thon in the spring of each year.  At this event, alumni and student volunteers come together to call FMU graduates and solicit their support of the membership campaign.  The membership campaign is the primary fund raising effort of the Office of the Alumni Affairs and provides the funding for most alumni events, the Alumni Membership and Recognition Dinner, alumni awards, Homecoming, the Alumni-In-Admissions events, the SAA, and student scholarships supported by the Alumni Office.

Departmental Alumni Events

Many FMU alumni share specific interests and have degrees from the same areas of study.  The Alumni Office attempts to bring these graduates together so that they can share in their career success and memories of professors and classes.  In addition, many of these events include the presentation of Outstanding Alumni Awards.  If you or someone you know should be considered for an award from our discipline, please email Julian Young telling her exactly why you are deserving of recognition.  The departments and schools that are now holding annual alumni events include:

  • Biology Department
  • Nursing Department
  • Psychology Department
  • School of Business
  • School of Education

FMU Student Alumni Association (SAA)

A student organization open to all students that promotes the Alumni Association and the University through its sponsorship of various volunteer programs.  The SAA attempts to foster continued support of the Alumni Association  among current students, encouraging continued membership after graduation.  The SAA has increasingly become one of the most active groups on campus and are the source for the Alumni Association's most dedicated volunteers.  SAA events include:

  • Sponsoring an event at Welcome Week for Freshman
  • Sponsoring the Spirit Stick for Homecoming
  • Sponsoring the Homecoming Ball
  • Participating in Arts Alive, the International Festival, and the Pee Dee Heart Walk
  • Volunteering time at local schools and other non-profit organizations in the Pee Dee
  • Offering volunteer service and time at Freshman Move-In Day, the Alumni Membership Dinner, alumni gathering, and Homecoming
  • Coordinated and sponsor the annual Alumni Membership Phone-A-Thon
  • Provide an SAA representative at each meeting of the Alumni Board

Move-In Day for New Freshmen

FMU faculty and staff welcome new students to campus on Move-In Day each fall.  Alumni and student volunteers are always on hand to help students and parents unload bags and take luggage to their "new" rooms.  More importantly, all volunteers are available to share a smile and say "Welcome to the FMU Family."  President Fred Carter can be found on campus serving hot dogs to our new students and volunteers.  Move-In Day is fun for all that are with us!
