Session Instructor and Director of Public Affairs for the South Carolina Budget and Control Board

Michael Sponhour has been the Director of Public Affairs for the South Carolina Budget and Control Board since 1999. In this position, he manages media relations and marketing for the 1,100 employee agency whose duties include operation of the state retirement system, the public employee health plan, and coordination of state budgetary matters.

Before joining the Board, Sponhour was a reporter for The State, where he worked for 10 years in positions that included covering state government and politics, statewide education issues, and local government.

Sponhour earned a B.A. in Journalism from Ohio State University, and an M.A. in History from the University of South Carolina.  He is also a 2002 graduate of the South Carolina Executive Institute.
