The Biology Department offers both a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degrees with a major in biology. As well as a minor and a collateral for students in other majors.

This page contains basic information regarding what it takes to earn a basic bachelor’s degree in biology at FMU. This curriculum can be tailored to fit your career goals. More information about our specific programs and options can be found on their respective webpages by clicking on the links below. Information about the biology minor and collateral requirements can be found at the bottom of the page.

As will all FMU students, biology majors must also complete a minor (18-hours) or two collaterals (12-hours each) in other disciplines. As part of the degree requirements, biology majors will automatically earn a chemistry collateral. What a student needs to decide is whether they will pursue a minor in chemistry by taking two more classes, or complete a second collateral in another field. For most post-undergraduate plans, the chemistry minor is recommended.

We also recommend that students participate in at least two semesters of Biology 497: Special Studies with a faculty researcher (one credit hour of reading and planning followed by two credit hours of independent research). Please see our research page to see the research interests of our faculty. For students in professional careers, credit for internships is also available in some cases.

Links to Specific Programs

Students pursuing a specific professional degree will have to modify the basic biology major to fulfill the requirements needed to apply to the specific professional schools of their choice. Pre-nursing students complete about half of a biology degree before applying to the nursing program in their sophomore year.

Biology Minor Requirements

A person wanting to earn a minor in biology must complete 18 hours of biology courses, including the following:

  • Biological Sciences I (BIOL 105)
  • Laboratory for Biological Sciences I (BIOL 115)
  • Biological Sciences II (BIOL 106)
  • Biology Electives – 3 courses (at least 2 must be above 200-level)

Biology Collateral Requirements

A person wanting to earn a collateral in biology must complete 12 hours of biology courses, including the following:
