Orientation FAQ

How do I signup for Orientation?

To signup for Orientation you can just follow this link which will take you to the signup page.  Choose "Register for Orientation" and login with your FMU login information. If you have any trouble logging in call our office at (843) 661-1288 and we will get you registered over the phone.

What will I do at Orientation?

  • Meet faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • Meet with a faculty member from the department of your major to be advised and registered for fall courses.
  • Learn about campus services, programs, and resources.
  • Meet other new students and current students.guys-in-The-Grille
  • Learn about campus life.
  • Get your FMU student ID made.

Is there a fee to attend Orientation?

Students must pay the $118.00 matriculation deposit (non-refundable after May 1).  Guests may attend for an additional fee of $25.00 per guest for the Freshman Orientation sessions. Due to space limitations, there is a two- person limit to the number of guests a student can bring. (Note: The $25 guest fee is not required at the transfer orientations or the January orientation.)

Do new freshmen have to stay overnight?
No, we offer both 1-day and 2-day orientation options for new freshmen. You are able to select the one that best fits your needs. Both will include the same informational sessions, however, the 2-day orientation allows students the opportunity to stay overnight in a residence hall as well as meet other new freshmen through games and activities.

What do I need to bring to the overnight orientation?

FMU will provide you with a pillow and sheets.  However, you will need to bring the following items: blanket, alarm clock, brush/hairdryer, towels, shampoo/other hygiene products, jacket, and umbrella.  You will also need to bring any necessary medications or medical supplies.

Be sure to wear comfortable shoes as you will be walking to different areas on campus throughout your orientation.

Should my parents come with me to Orientation?

Bringing a parent or guardian is optional. Parents or guardians are certainly invited to attend Orientation, but this is left at the discretion of the individual student and family. During Freshman Orientation sessions, we do have several presentations specifically for parents.

When and how do I register for my classes?

New students are required to attend Orientation in order to be eligible to register for classes. You cannot register without having first attended Orientation. You will meet with a faculty member from the department of your major and together you and he or she will determine your classes. After meeting with the faculty member who will be advising you, you will be registered for classes.

Students-in-stands-at-HomecomingDo RN to BSN students need to attend orientation?

No, RN to BSN students do not need to attend orientation.  They should contact the Nursing Department (843.661.1690) in order to register for courses.

Do I need to take any placement tests?

All new students will be placed into either English 101 or 101-E upon completion of the self-placement questionnaire. You may find more information about these courses here. New students will also be placed by the Math department into a Math course. Transfer students who have never taken a college level English course must also take the English self-placement questionnaire. Students may be exempted from or receive freshmen English/Math course credit through Advanced Placement or Dual Enrollment credit.

Can students with disabilities receive special accommodations?

Students with special needs who would like accommodations for Orientation, such as wheelchair assistance, can have arrangements made by calling the Office of Counseling and Testing at 843-661-1840. We ask that you contact this office seven days prior to your Orientation date to enable them to prepare for your arrival.

How will I know where to meet the afternoon of Orientation?

The confirmation email you receive from the Orientation Office after you have registered will specify where to meet that afternoon. For additional help navigating the campus, the Orientation Office will post signs all over campus directing you to the different locations.
