Register of Endowed Scholarships

Endowed scholarships provide a permanent source of financial assistance to deserving students. Through the endowment process, scholarship funds continue to grow year after year, thereby assisting students in perpetuity. Scholarships are endowed through the Francis Marion University Education Foundation.


The Ann Burch Aiken Scholarship. Established in January 2009 by the Aiken Foundation, this scholarship honors a lifelong resident of the Pee Dee area, a devoted mother, a community leader, and a volunteer. A student of Florence County schools, Mrs. Aiken contributed to the Pee Dee through her many involvements and instilled in her four children and their children a love of the region. Mrs. Aiken would be proud that her scholarship provides assistance to Pee Dee area Francis Marion University students who share her love of learning and respect for their community. The scholarship benefits a student from the Pee Dee.

The Aiken Family Scholarship Fund. This fund consists of a number of scholarships. The J. Boone Aiken Scholarship. Established in 1971 by J. Boone Aiken, longtime community leader of Florence, this scholarship is an award given to incoming freshmen on the basis of scholarship, character, need, and school or community service. The J. Boone Aiken Business Administration Scholarship. Established in December 1981 by The Aiken Foundation in memory of J. Boone Aiken, a Florence business and community leader who was Chairman of the Guaranty Bank & Trust Co. from 1950 until his death in 1978, this scholarship awards deserving Francis Marion University students majoring in business administration or economics. The J. Boone Aiken Citizenship Scholarship. Established in 1976 by J. Boone Aiken, this scholarship is an award made to a student who demonstrates those unusual qualities of life which promote the best interest of humanity. The Pearle E. Aiken Memorial Scholarship. Established in May 1974 in memory of Pearle Aiken by the Magnolia Garden Club and J. Boone Aiken Sr., this scholarship is an award made to worthy students in need of assistance to finish their education.

The Altrusa Club of Florence Scholarship. Established in 1974 by the Altrusa Club of Florence, this scholarship is awarded to female students from Florence School District 1 on the basis of scholastic achievement and need.

The Ralph King Anderson III Scholarship. Established in April 1984 by Judge Ralph King Anderson Jr., this is an award made to assist a qualified paraplegic or a qualified quadriplegic at Francis Marion University.

The Rob and Shannon Ardis STEM Endowed Scholarship. Established in July 2022, this scholarship provides opportunities for deserving students to pursue a degree from Francis Marion University. Robert Gene Ardis III and Shannon Cribb Ardis are both first generation college students, and both graduated from Francis Marion University with a 4.0 GPA. Shannon began her career practicing physical therapy shortly after graduating from FMU, and Rob is currently the CEO of Santee Electric Cooperative and has continued supporting FMU by volunteering on FMU’s engineering advisory board since the inception of the Industrial Engineering degree at FMU. The scholarship recipient must major in one of the following: Math, Physics, Biology, or one of the Engineering degrees offered by FMU, be a full-time student in good standing, and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to a first generation college student from Georgetown, Florence, Williamsburg, Clarendon, Marion, Dillon, or Darlington County.

The Assurant Specialty Property Scholarship. Established to recognize and assist an outstanding student, this scholarship will be awarded to a dependent of an Assurant Specialty Property employee in Florence, S.C. Assurant is a premier provider of specialized insurance products focused on providing a variety of affordable plan choices to consumers.

The AT&T Fine Arts Scholarship. Established October 2009 in honor of Dr. Fred Carter and to recognize the FMU Performing Arts Center and its impact on the Pee Dee Region, this scholarship is an award to a student with financial need who is a resident of South Carolina, preferably the Pee Dee region, with a major in performing arts.

The Hartwell M. Ayer and Cornelia W. Ayer Scholarship. Established in August 1996 with a bequest from Col. Cornelia W. Ayer, this scholarship awards deserving students.

The Alice Coleman Baker Scholarship. Established in October 2007 by Alice Coleman Baker’s family and friends to honor her 30 years of service to Francis Marion University as director and assistant vice president of human resources, this endowed scholarship gives first preference to a member of John Calvin Presbyterian Church. Consideration is also given to students majoring in business administration and residents of the Pee Dee.

The Dr. John W. Baker Fine Arts Memorial Scholarship. Established in September 1986 by family and friends of Dr. Baker, the first Vice President for Academic Affairs at FMU, this award is given to a junior or senior on the basis of outstanding work in music or art.

The Doris K. Banks Memorial Scholarship. Established in January 1986 by her family and her friends, this scholarship awards a qualified graduate of West Florence High School who has been accepted at Francis Marion University.

The Elizabeth Barnes Memorial Nursing Scholarship. Established in August 1999, this scholarship is given by the Drs. Bruce and Lee Foundation in memory of Elizabeth Barnes for her dedication to the nursing profession. The recipient must be a nursing student from Florence, Darlington, Dillon, Marion, Williamsburg, Clarendon, or Marlboro County.

The Bahij Joseph “B.J.” Baroody Scholarship. Established in December 2005 by Charles Schofield, James Schofield, and Marshall Schofield, this scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Mr. Baroody, a founder and guest lecturer at the University of South Carolina in Florence, now Francis Marion University.  Mr. Baroody, a parasitologist and author, was the first South Carolinian inducted into the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine in London. The scholarship is designated for a student with financial need enrolled in the nursing program and a resident of South Carolina.

The Flora M. Barringer Scholarship. Established in August 1988 by the Flora M. Barringer Foundation, this scholarship awards a junior or senior majoring in business or economics who maintains a grade point average of 3.0.

The Martin C. Barringer Scholarship. Established in March 1991 by Davis National Bank and Martin C. Barringer who served on the bank’s board for many years as director and chairman, this scholarship is an award made to a resident of Marion County (first preference), the Pee Dee, or the Grand Strand area who is majoring in business administration.

The William R. Barringer Scholarship. Established in August 1988 by the Flora M. Barringer Foundation, this scholarship awards a junior or senior majoring in business or economics maintaining a grade point average of 3.0 or better.

The E. J. Bartol Memorial Scholarship. Established in January 1993 by his son, Larry J. Bartol, this scholarship is an award made to a deserving student whose parent is an alumnus of Francis Marion University.

The H. Philip Baugh Scholarship. Established by Philip Baugh in memory of his father H. Philip Baugh, this scholarship is awarded to a student who is a member of a Presbyterian Church in the Pee Dee Area, with a focus on a congregation located in a rural community. If there is no such candidate, the recipient must be a resident of the Pee Dee.

The Elizabeth S. Beasley Scholarship. Established in March 2012 through an estate gift, this scholarship is designated for students with financial need.

The Lewis E. Beasley Americanism Scholarship. Established in 1977 by Senator Strom Thurmond, advisor to the John P. Gaty Charitable Trust, this is a scholarship based on the competitive excellence of a student paper showing a strong advocacy of the private free enterprise system and the form of government provided by the U. S. Constitution.

The John C. and Anna M. Bernhard Scholarship Fund. Established in May 1984 by Mr. and Mrs. John C. Bernhard in honor of Christie Clarke, this award is made on the basis of academic excellence to deserving Francis Marion University students.

The Nabila F. Bishara Memorial Nursing Scholarship. Established in October 2006 by her husband Dr. Makram A. Bishara and sons, Dr. Tarek M. Bishara and Steve M. Bishara, to recognize Nabila F. Bishara’s dedication to the field of healthcare, in particular nursing, this scholarship awards a student in the nursing program, with first preference given to students from Mullins, S.C., and second preference given to students from Marion, S.C.

The William J. Blackwell and William E. Carpenter Memorial Scholarship. Established through the Francis Marion University Foundation in 1975 by Mr. William H. Blackwell, a founder of Francis Marion University, in memory of his father, William J. Blackwell, and Mrs. Blackwell’s father, William E. Carpenter, this scholarship awards students on the basis of need, character, and commitment to ministerial careers.

The Bostick-Camp Endowed Scholarship. Established in December 2020 by Rebecca Bostick Smarr in loving memory of her parents Joseph LeGette (Joe) Bostick, Sr., and Francis Ann Hyman (Faye) Bostick, this scholarship was inspired by Mrs. Smart’s “other mother,” Mildred Graham Camp. Although Mrs. Camp was unable to fulfill her dream of becoming a nurse, she exemplified the highest ideals of nursing in a lifetime of caring for others. The recipient must be an incoming freshman to Francis Marion University who demonstrates financial need, a graduate of Hannah-Pamplico High School, and a pre-nursing major. Hannah-Pamplico High School will provide recommendations of qualifying students with exemplary character.

The William H. Breazeale Jr. Scholarship Fund. Established in May 1997 by colleagues, friends, alumni, and students, this scholarship honors Dr. William H. “Jack” Breazeale upon his retirement from Francis Marion University. Dr. Breazeale served as Chairman of the Department of Chemistry and Physics for 27 years. The fund provides scholarships for a sophomore, junior, or senior student who is majoring in chemistry or physics, with preference given to chemistry majors.

The Howard Hampton Brown Scholarship. Established in June 1994 by Howard Scott Brown, Karen Kay Brown McMurphy, James Martin McMurphy, Barry Stephen Brown, and Gregory Alan Brown, to honor their father, Reverend Howard Hampton Brown, this scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student from Kershaw County, South Carolina. 

The Margaret M. Bryant Award. Established in December 1972 by Dr. Margaret M. Bryant, this scholarship awards deserving seniors majoring in humanities and who plan to pursue graduate work in the humanities.

The Julia and Mark Buyck Endowed Scholarship. Established October 2015 by Julia and Mark Buyck, lifelong supporters of education, the arts, and civic engagement who have enriched the region with their wisdom, leadership, and philanthropic activities, this scholarship was established to recognize the merits and academic achievements of a deserving incoming Francis Marion University student from South Carolina. 

The Dr. Joseph P. Cain Jr. Memorial Scholarship. Established in January 1976 by the Mullins Civitan Club, this scholarship is an award made to a student from the Mullins School System or from Marion County on the basis of demonstrated interest in completing a college education.

The Wylie H. and Isabelle B. Caldwell Memorial Scholarship. Established in November 1989 by Judge Wylie H. Caldwell Jr., in memory of his father, the first Family Court Judge for Florence County who served in this position from 1969 until 1980, this scholarship is an award made to Francis Marion University students who are residents of Florence County.

The Dr. Freda Campbell-Wilson Scholarship. Established in February 2019 to honor the memory of Dr. Freda Campbell-Wilson, a pioneering educator in her field, this scholarship provides opportunities to minority students at Francis Marion University who are interested in the healthcare field. Dr. Campbell-Wilson came to FMU in late 2016 to guide the creation of the new Speech Language Pathology Program, and she completed that task. Scholarship recipients must be full-time students in good standing making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree in the health sciences at FMU, and they must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average and demonstrate financial need.

The A. E. Carmichael Family Scholarship. Established in March 1974, this is an award to students made on the basis of scholastic merit and need.

The Carolina Bank Golf Scholarship. Established in January 2002, this is an award for an outstanding student-athlete who is a member of the Francis Marion University golf team.

The Carolina Health Care Scholarship. Established in April 2002 to encourage students to pursue careers in health care, this award is designated for a student with financial need who is majoring in any health care related area.

The Stanley R. Carraway Jr. Scholarship. Established in August 1998 by Stanley and Boo Carraway, alumni of Francis Marion University, this scholarship is an award for a nontraditional, part-time student enrolled in two or three courses, majoring in business administration, and maintaining a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

The Elizabeth V. Carter Memorial Scholarship. Established in April 1986 by Elizabeth Carter’s husband, Francis L. Carter, this scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding Francis Marion University student.

The Citizens Bank Scholarship. Established in March 2012 to recognize and assist an outstanding student from the communities served by The Citizens Bank, a premier financial provider for local communities in South Carolina, this scholarship is designated for a student majoring in business.

The Mom and Pop Coffing Women’s Basketball Scholarship. Established in August 1984 by Mr. Ralph Coffing, this scholarship is an award made to assist deserving women basketball players.

The Mr. and Mrs. W. Luther Coker Memorial Scholarship. Established by Dr. and Mrs. Morgan B. Coker, family and friends in memory of Dr. Coker’s parents, this scholarship is an annual award to a Francis Marion University student who has maintained a 3.25 grade point average, is majoring in business or education, and has completed specified science courses.

The Dr. Morgan B. Coker Endowed Scholarship. Established in February 2018 by Dr. Coker’s wife, Mrs. Helen Coker, this scholarship will commemorate his service to Francis Marion University in perpetuity. Dr. Coker was the founding chair of the Department of Business Administration at FMU and became the first Dean of the School of Business in 1987. He served at FMU for 29 years during which he inspired thousands of students, challenging them to reach their potential. Recipients of the scholarship must major in a field within the FMU School of Business, hold junior status, maintain a cumulative 3.0 grade point average, demonstrate financial need, and be a resident of South Carolina’s Pee Dee region. 

The Coker-Harrington Student Recruitment Scholarship. Established in February 2008 by The Richard C. Harrington Family, this scholarship honors Dr. Morgan Coker, Dean of the Francis Marion University School of Business from 1970 to 1989, and also serves as a memorial to Mr. Harrington’s son, R. Carl Harrington. This fund provides assistance for the recruitment and retention of out-of-state students with demonstrated academic achievement, and first preference will be given to students with a major in business or education.

The Moseley C. Coleman Scholarship. Established in January 1976 by Mr. Coleman, this award is made on the basis of scholarship, merit, and financial need to applicants whose records indicate they will make the best of their opportunity to attend Francis Marion University.

The W. W. “Buster” and Martha H. Coleman Scholarship. Established in April 1990 by William W. Coleman Jr., and Alice Coleman Baker, son and daughter of Buster and Martha Coleman, this scholarship is awarded to a student-athlete or a student from Hannah-Pamplico High School.

The Helen M. Cramer Scholarship. Established in December 1990 by Mrs. Helen M. Cramer and her son, Mr. Samuel Cramer, this scholarship serves as an award made to employees and children of employees of Aluminum Ladder Company or Carbis Sales who are full-time students at Francis Marion University.

The Dr. Lyn M. Croshaw Scholarship. Established in December 2019, this scholarship provides opportunities for deserving students to pursue a degree from Francis Marion University. Dr. Croshaw was the first of his family to achieve a college degree, made possible by scholarships that he received. He joined Francis Marion College in 1970 as one of the original professors in the Department of Biology and is remembered fondly by many that he encountered over his fulfilling 35-year career. Recipients must be a junior or senior pursuing a degree in Biology (major or minor) and planning to teach at the high school or college level. Recipients must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, demonstrate financial need, and write a paper about how this scholarship will make a difference for them. Preference is given to Biology majors seeking a PhD. 

The Marion G. Daniels Scholarship. Established in March 2004 by a generous gift from the Estate of Mrs. Marion G. Daniels to recognize and assist outstanding students who are pursuing a college degree, this scholarship is an award to a student from Florence County with financial need.

The Darlington County School District Endowed Scholarship for Teacher Education. Established in October 2000 by the Darlington County School District Board of Education, this scholarship is an award made to a student from Darlington County who has been accepted into the Teacher Education Program.

The Thomas C. Davidson Scholarship Fund. Established in June 2003 by FMU alumni and friends as an award to pay tribute to Coach Tom Davidson who faithfully served the students of Francis Marion University as assistant dean of students, assistant baseball coach, assistant men’s basketball coach, and men’s soccer coach, this scholarship is designated for a member of the baseball team or a student leader involved in student government, the university programming board, Greek organizations, or student publications.

The Rhett C. E. Davis Memorial Scholarship. Established in August 1993 by Dr. and Mrs. Roger A. Davis, family, and friends of Rhett Davis, this scholarship is awarded to a Francis Marion University student who exhibits good character, scholarship, and commitment to humankind.

The Yvonne G. Davis Endowed Community Service Scholarship. Established in February 2019 by the president of Francis Marion University, Dr. Luther F. Carter, on the behalf of the FMU African-American Faculty and Staff Coalition, this scholarship honors Yvonne G. Davis. Yvonne served the FMU community for 34 years and is an active and vibrant national advocate for community health centers. Her passion and commitment to help restore and develop healthy communities, especially in rural and underserved areas, are commendable, and therefore, should be sustained. The establishment of this scholarship helps to guarantee this continuity. Each scholarship recipient must be a full-time student in good standing who is making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree at Francis Marion University. They must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, demonstrate financial need, and plan to pursue a career in community service upon graduation. Preference will be given to minority students who are U.S. Citizens.

The F. Howard DeBerry Business Endowed Scholarship. Established in October 2021 by Kathleen Baskin and her four children, Frederick H. DeBerry, Jr., Kathleen Brungard, Jacquelyn Odell, and Maria Clayton, this scholarship honors the memory of F. Howard DeBerry. Mr. DeBerry, a veteran of WWII and a respected businessman, began his career as a residential developer in the Florence area. He was the president of the F. Howard DeBerry Real Estate Co. and secretary and treasurer of Tarlton Estates, Inc. The scholarship recipient must be a Business major with a GPA of 2.7 or higher, a South Carolina resident, and a full-time student in good standing. The recipient must demonstrate financial need. First preference will be given to a first generation college student. 

The Nicky Demetrious Scholarship. Established in January of 2009 by friends and family of Nicky Demetrious, this scholarship perpetuates his memory in the areas that meant a great deal to him: education and athletics. Since he was a graduate of FMU and a Darlington County native, a scholarship is a fitting tribute to this man who spent his life enhancing the quality of life in the Pee Dee. His legacy will live on through the young people who receive this award. The scholarship benefits a student athlete at Francis Marion participating on either the men’s or women’s tennis team in recognition of his love of the game of tennis.

FMU and Communities in Schools in Dillon County Scholarship. Established in June 2011 through a partnership between Francis Marion University and Communities in Schools of Dillon County, this  scholarship will be awarded to a graduate of Dillon High School, Lake View High School, and Latta High School. The scholarship is restricted to incoming freshmen and is not renewable. If high school consolidation occurs, the Francis Marion University Foundation will consult with the Community in Schools of Dillon County Board. The scholarship will be awarded based on financial need, good character, and active participation in high school. The respective high schools and Communities in Schools of Dillon County will coordinate the selection of the recipient with FMU’s Financial Assistance Office to ensure that the student with the greatest need and potential to succeed receives the award.

Distinguished Alumni Scholarship. Established by past recipients of FMU’s annual Distinguished Alumnus Award, the Distinguished Alumni Scholarship provides recognition and financial assistance to future generations of Francis Marion University students. Preference is given to children of FMU alumni.

The Catherine Claire and Susan Elaine Dozier Endowed Scholarship. Established in December 1992 by family and friends to honor Catherine Claire and Susan Elaine Dozier, this award is presented to deserving Francis Marion University students who are majoring in nursing or pre-medicine.

The Dugout Scholarship. Established in May 1990 by Dr. E. Conyers O’Bryan, The Dugout Scholarship assists Francis Marion University student-athletes who show outstanding ability in baseball. After Dr. O’Bryan’s death in May 2017, the Francis Marion University Education Foundation and the Francis Marion University Athletics Department became stewards of the funds and will award them based on the scholarship’s original criteria.

The Duke Energy Mathematics Scholarship. Established in March 2002, this scholarship will assist students who wish to pursue a teaching career as well as the students that these teachers will serve and instruct. The award is designated for students whose residence is served by Progress Energy. This scholarship was made possible through a generous gift from Progress Energy.

The Duke Energy Science Scholarship. Established in March 2002 through a generous gift from Progress Energy, this scholarship provides support for students seeking to become qualified teachers and the future children who will benefit from their presence. The award is designated for students whose residence is served by Progress Energy. 

The Joseph Benjamin DuRant Scholarship. Established in December 1995 by Mr. DuRant in honor of his friend Mr. John McInnes, this award is made in recognition of Mr. DuRant’s commitment to education and to improving the quality of life for the citizens of Florence.

The Joseph Benjamin DuRant Athletic Scholarship. Established in January 2003 by Mr. DuRant, this scholarship will further educational opportunities for student athletes in the pursuit of an undergraduate degree at Francis Marion University. Preference is given to students from Florence County.

The Dow and Alice Eagles Memorial Scholarship. Originally established in August 1979 by Mrs. Lorenzo D. Eagles Sr., her family, and her friends in memory of Lorenzo Dow Eagles Sr., the award was revised in March 2006 following her death. This scholarship recognizes the scholastic merits and achievements of a deserving student from the Great Pee Dee region.

The Francis “Frank” Marion and Lucille Caston Elmore Scholarship. Originally established in October 1979 to honor Frank Elmore by his widow, Mrs. Lucille (F.M.) Elmore, and his daughter, Dr. Frances L. Elmore, this award is given in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Elmore to an incoming freshman on the basis of merit. The scholarship is renewable if the student maintains a 3.0 GPA.

The ESAB Welding & Cutting Products Inc. Scholarship. Established in April 2005, this scholarship recognizes and assists outstanding students who have financial need who reside in the Pee Dee area.

The Farmers Telephone Cooperative Scholarship. Established April 1995 and endowed in June 2002, this scholarship is an award for a student living in the service area (Lee, Sumter, Clarendon, Williamsburg, and lower Florence counties) of the Farmers Telephone Cooperative or whose parents or guardians are members of the Cooperative.

The First Reliance Bank Scholarship. Established in August 2003 by First Reliance Bank in Florence to recognize and assist outstanding students pursuing a degree in business, this is an award for a student from the Pee Dee area who is a business or finance major. Preferences are given to students who are a dependent of an employee of First Reliance Bank, graduate of Florence Christian School, or a student-athlete.

The Fleet Mortgage Business Scholar Award. Established in May 1988 by Fleet Mortgage, this is an award given to a junior or senior majoring in business administration or economics who maintains a grade point average of 3.0 or better. The recipient will be known as the Fleet Mortgage Business Scholar.

The Florence City / County Bicentennial Scholarship. Established in 1977 by the Florence City/County Bicentennial Commission, this scholarship is awarded annually to a student on the basis of general merit reflected by scholarship, good citizenship, and academic promise.

The Florence County Bar Pre-Law Scholarship. Established in December 2000 by the Florence County Bar Association, this scholarship is an award made to a student in the Pre-Law Program with preference given to Florence County students.

The Florence Rotary Club Endowment Scholarships. Established in November 1979, this scholarship is offered on the basis of need deserving students demonstrating acceptable scholarship.

The Florence School District #4 Board of Trustees Scholarship. Established in November 1999, this scholarship is an award designated for a graduate of Timmonsville High School who is majoring in education or seeking teacher certification.

The W. Lee Flowers Athletic Scholarship. Established in February 2001 by W. Lee Flowers, this award of varying amounts is given to a student-athlete who has shown excellent skill in the classroom and on the field of competition. The award may be renewed annually for up to four years as long as the recipient remains in good standing with the University and the NCAA.

The Dr. Lonie Clarence Floyd Jr. Scholarship. Established in December 2005 by Charles Schofield, James Schofield, and Marshall Schofield, this scholarship honors the memory of Dr. L.C. Floyd Jr., a family practice physician for forty years. The need-based scholarship is designated for a student registered with the committee on pre-medical sciences.

The Wanda Love Sarvis France-Kelly Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Established in April 2009, the fifth anniversary of the “Walking for Wanda” Multiple Sclerosis Walking Team, this scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Wanda France-Kelly, a public school kindergarten teacher before being diagnosed with MS in 1990, and an advocate for MS research for treatment and cure until her passing in 2002. This fund is intended to provide financial assistance and recognize the scholastic merits of a deserving Francis Marion University student and SC or NC resident who has been accepted into the Teacher Education Program for Early Childhood Education. The recipient must maintain a 3.25 cumulative GPA at minimum.

The Francis Marion University Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship. Established in September 1990, this scholarship is offered to deserving students who meet the academic criteria.

The Honda Industrial Engineering Scholarship. Established to assist students, this scholarship will be awarded to those pursuing and completing degree requirements in the Industrial Engineering Program at Francis Marion University.

The B. Pratt Gasque Scholarship. Established in April 1987 by Mr. Gasque, this scholarship is an award made to students from Marion County, preferably majoring in history.

The Charlie and Arquila Gause Memorial Scholarship. Established in July 2007 by Mr. Walter Timothy Gause in memory of his parents’ commitment to the American Dream, this scholarship is an award made to students with financial need, with preference given to students representing an underserved population. First preference is given to students who are majoring in math, one of the sciences, or sociology and who are from the Pee Dee area.

The Julia L. Gentry Nursing Scholarship. Established in June 2000, this endowed scholarship was funded by Kenneth G. and Betty B. Gentry in memory of their daughter Julia, a member of the Francis Marion University Class of 1982. The award is made to a student who is pursuing a degree in nursing.

The Joan and Garry Gladstone Academic Scholarship. Established in May 1987 by Mrs. Joan Gladstone and endowed in 1999, this scholarship is for upperclassmen or freshmen showing academic promise and financial need.

The Maude and A.G. Greene Endowed Scholarship. Established in April 2019 by Glenn and Belva Green to honor the memory of lifelong educators Maude and A.G. Green, this scholarship will be awarded to a declared education major from the Pee Dee Region of South Carolina. Preference is given to a first generation university student in need of support to continue towards a degree in Education.

The Dr. Stephen A. Greenberg Scholarship. Established in May 1986 by his wife and sons, this scholarship is an award made to a deserving student with financial need and with a specific goal directed toward helping others.

The Coach Griffin Endowed Scholarship. Established in December 2021 and sponsored by Gerald Griffin and Sandra Griffin, this scholarship honors Coach Griffin and his contributions to Francis Marion University athletics. Coach Griffin established the Francis Marion baseball program in 1972 and guided the Patriots for 28 seasons until his retirement in 2000. He registered more than 730 career victories, including 22 years of 20-plus wins at the helm of the Francis Marion program. The scholarship recipient must be a current FMU student-athlete playing baseball. The recipient must also be in good academic standing and meet all NCAA eligibility requirements.

The Margaret McLamb Grimsby and Eva Bradford Scholarship. Established in May 2012 through an estate gift given by Ms. Margaret McLamb Grimsby, this scholarship furthers her commitment to make sure students are afforded the opportunity to attend Francis Marion University. First preference is given to a Pee Dee resident, and the recipient must demonstrate financial need and have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

The Captain Harley B. Hackett III Scholarship. Established in January 1974 and given in memory of Captain Harley B. Hackett III, USAF by his mother, Mrs. John H. (Rebecca) Knobeloch, this scholarship is an award made to an entering freshman with modest financial resources on the basis of academic potential and demonstrated initiative.

The Dr. Kenneth H. Hanger, Jr. Scholarship for Foreign Students. Established in January 1992 by Dr. Kenneth H. Hanger, Jr., this is an award made to an international student who is enrolled in the business program at Francis Marion University.

The Kenneth and Robin Hanger Scholarship. Established in January 1991, this scholarship is an award made to a high school graduate from Florence County who demonstrates a need for financial assistance.

The Gary W. Hanson Scholarship. Established in the fall of 2005 by Dr. Gary Hanson’s family and friends, this scholarship honors his legacy at Francis Marion University. He is remembered as a distinguished faculty member, administrator, and friend. An award will be made to a graduate student enrolled in the Master of Science in Applied Psychology.

The Dr. Harlan Hawkins Women’s Basketball Scholarship. Established in May 1989 by Dr. Harlan G. Hawkins, a retired Francis Marion University professor, this award is made to a member of the Francis Marion University women’s basketball team who meets the academic requirements for receiving financial assistance at the university.

The Dr. Lynn D. “Skip” Hendrick Award in Physics and Health Physics. Established in August 1999 by friends and colleagues to honor Dr. Hendrick, a founding faculty member who devoted his professional life to the teaching of college physics, this scholarship is awarded to a sophomore, junior, or senior who is majoring in health physics, physics, or engineering.

The Dr. Carlanna L. Hendricks Endowed Scholarship in History. Established in November 2021, this scholarship was created by Dr. Carlanna L. Hendricks, a faculty member at Francis Marion University for 18 years and a faculty member at the Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics for 31 years. Dr. Hendricks played a role in developing the History department at FMU and a critical role as the chairperson for the Humanities department at the GSSM. Scholarship recipients should be full-time students in good standing and have a 3.0 minimum GPA and the highest end-of-semester average in American History (History 101 or 102). Preference will be given to a first generation student.

Jamie Herring Endowed Scholarship. Established in August 2020 by Jamie Herring’s family and supporters, this scholarship honors his memory. Jamie was born with aortic stenosis, causing his heart to enlarge and become non-effective, which led to him overcoming tremendous odds over the course of his life. Jamie passed away in 2010 but lived a full life with his wife and child in Latta, South Carolina. Recipients of this scholarship must be accepted into an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program, a resident of Marion or Dillon county, and a full-time student in good standing. The recipient must have a 3.0 grade point average and must also demonstrate financial need.

The Joseph E. Heyward Endowed Scholarship. Established as a need-based scholarship by the African-American Faculty/Staff Coalition, this award honors Dr. Joseph E. Heyward. The scholarship will be awarded to African-American students who are sophomores, juniors, or seniors in order to help them achieve their educational and career goals at Francis Marion University.

The Wessie G. Hicks Nursing Scholarship. Established in September 2006 by her children, Lee Hicks Nunn and Ruell L. Hicks, Jr., in memory and honor of their mother’s dedication to the field of nursing, this scholarship is an award made to a student from the Pee Dee area who has been formally admitted into the nursing program.

The Wilbur Hicks Music Scholarship. Established in September 2006 in memory of Wilbur Hicks, a native of Florence County who was a poet, song writer, musician, preacher, barber, farmer and man of many trades and talents, this scholarship is an award for a student from the Pee Dee area who has a major concentration in music.

The Gladys Hite Tennis Scholarship. Established in April 2002 by Gladys Hite, this scholarship is an award to assist an outstanding student-athlete who is a member of the FMU women’s tennis team.

The Wayne E. Huggins Scholarship. Established in December 2002 by FMU alumnus Wayne Huggins, this scholarship is an award to a student-athlete pursuing a degree in one of the following areas: general business, accounting, or computer science. Each student recipient must be a graduate of a South Carolina High School, with preference given to students from the Pee Dee region. The award  will be made to a member of the baseball team, women’s basketball team, or men’s basketball team.

The Joseph A. James Scholarship. Established in November 2005 by Barbara and Hamilton Lott in honor and recognition of Dr. Joe James’ distinguished career as a faculty member at Francis Marion University, this scholarship is designated for a junior or senior with a major in Modern Languages – French Track.

The Wanda and Arnett James Scholarship. Established to recognize and assist an outstanding student who is enrolled full-time at Francis Marion University, this scholarship represents the commitment Wanda and Arnett James have to the importance of access to higher education and their role in improving the lives of their employees and customers. First preference will be given to a student who is an employee or dependent of an employee of McDonald’s restaurants owned and operated by Wanda and Arnett James in the Pee Dee Region of S.C.  

The Ronald J. Jebaily Endowed Scholarship. Established in August 2019 by attorney Ronald J. Jebaily, founder of the Jebaily Law Firm. Ronald Jebaily got his start in his home state of New York under the guidance of the great Moe Levine at the law firm of Levine & Broder. After his parents moved to South Carolina, Ronald followed, and he quickly grew to love the Palmetto State. He decided that Florence was where he wanted to establish his firm. In the early days of the practice, Jebailey handled a wide range of legal matters. Eventually, he started to focus on workers’ compensation and personal injury cases. Ronald has always had a passion for learning and taught Political Science at Francis Marion from August 1970 until December 1971. By creating this scholarship, his legacy of learning will live on in perpetuity.  This scholarship is awarded to first generation college students, giving them the chance to pursue an education in the career path of legal services. Awardees must be first generation college students majoring in Pre-Law, Criminal Justice, or Political Science. They must be from the Pee Dee region, demonstrate financial need, and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.

The L. H. “Jack” and Helen Johnson Memorial Scholarship. Established in April 1976 by a resolution of the ACL YMCA Board dated December 12, 1975, these scholarships are annual awards made to deserving Francis Marion students.

The Jones/Mogy Kappa Alpha Order Scholarship. Established in November 2012 by family and friends, this scholarship honors the memory of Frank Fitzgerald Jones, a 1984 graduate who was killed in an auto/train accident in 1986, and Richard A. Mogy, a 1986 graduate who lost his life in an accident on his family farm in 2003. Both were members of the Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity, and this award is designated for a member of Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity.

The IGA Scholarship. Established by Henry Johnson and Heyward King, Jr., this scholarship focuses its support in the areas covered by IGA stores, with special consideration afforded to IGA employees, children and grandchildren.

The Charles Nelms Ingram Memorial Fund. Established by Mrs. Mary Alice Caudle Ingram in 1978, this scholarship awards worthy Francis Marion University students, as well as those in need.

The Junior League of Florence Scholarship. Established in November 1974, this scholarship is awarded to a sophomore, junior, or senior from Florence County who demonstrates scholastic merit.

The John and Adele Kassab Scholarship. Established in February 2006 in honor of John and Adele Kassab, two of FMU’s most ardent supporters since the institution’s inception who maintained a lifelong commitment to educating the young people of the Pee Dee area, this scholarship is designated for a student from Florence County who is majoring in education.

The James A. Kimbell Jr. Accounting Scholarship. Established in April 1995 in honor of Dr. James A. Kimbell by faculty, staff, students, and alumni, this scholarship is an award for a student majoring in accounting.

The Heyward L. King Sr. and Frances Cockfield King Scholarships. Established in June 2003 by family members, these two awards recognize and assist deserving students from Lake City, S.C.

The G. Wayne King Scholarship. Established in July 2008 to honor the distinguished career and unique memory of Dr. G. Wayne King who served on the faculty at Francis Marion University in the Department of History, this scholarship benefits a student from Florence County majoring in history.

The Kirby Scholarship. Established in April 1998 by John and Vicki Kirby, alumni of FMU, and endowed in July 2005 by Dr. John Kirby, this scholarship is an award to a junior or senior in the teacher education program with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and who is a graduate of Latta High School.

The Kraikit Education Scholarship. Established in March 2020 by Drs. Sompong and Suwanee Kraikit, this scholarship honors the leadership and commitment of Dr. Fred and Mrs. Folly Carter in creating a collaborative environment for Francis Marion University to thrive. Recipients must be Education majors, full-time students in good standing, and first generation college students. They must demonstrate financial need, maintain a 2.7 GPA or higher and be from the Pee Dee Region of South Carolina. Preference will be given to students from an historically underserved population.

The Sompong and Suwanee Kraikit Scholarship. Established in August 2006 by the Kraikits, generous benefactors of Francis Marion University, this scholarship covers the total cost of attendance and is designated for a teacher in Thailand who wishes to pursue a graduate degree in education. Upon completion of the program, the scholarship recipient is expected to return to Thailand to teach in a rural area.

The Latta School Board of Trustees Teacher Education Scholarship. Established in June of 1999, this endowed scholarship fund honors past and present members of the Latta School Board of Trustees. The award is made to a graduate of Latta High School who is majoring in education or seeking teacher certification.

The Jonathan Chase Lee Scholarship. Established in September 2009 in memory of Jonathan Chase Lee by his parents, David and Shana Lee, as well as his grandparents, his brother, and his uncle, this scholarship is an award to a graduate of Marion High School who is a resident of Marion County with financial need.

The William Albert Lewis Memorial Scholarship. Established in March 1987 by Mrs. Nelle J. Lewis, the widow of William Albert Lewis, and their daughters, Lynn L. Simmonds, Mitzi L. Leeke, and Gayle L. Nanke, this scholarship is an award made to a Francis Marion University student majoring in business administration. Preference is given to a student-athlete.

The Lillie-Kate Endowed Scholarship. Established in April 2018 by Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Funchess, who are passionate about increasing access to quality health care while providing opportunities for historically underrepresented populations to achieve an advanced education, this scholarship fund provides opportunities to deserving African-American students to pursue a degree from Francis Marion University in Physician Assistant Studies. The recipient must be a full-time student in good standing pursuing a Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies at Francis Marion University. The recipient must demonstrate financial need and be an African-American.

The Norma M. Lynch Scholarship. Established in September 1985 by Mr. Marvin W. Lynch, this scholarship is an award made to a senior majoring in education who is a graduate of a South Carolina High School and who is pursuing a teaching career in South Carolina.

The Phyllis Madden Scholarship. Established in 1976 by the Altrusa Club of Florence, this is a scholarship of varying amounts to be awarded to a student from Florence District One who is interested in a health profession upon graduation.

The Marion School District One Graduate Scholarship. Established in December 1981 by Marion School District One, this scholarship is an award made to recognize the promise of excellence demonstrated by teachers from Marion School District One who are Francis Marion University graduate students.

The Marlboro Electric Cooperative, Inc. Endowed Scholarship. Established in October 1997 and endowed in July 2004, this scholarship awards a full-time student who is the dependent of a member owner in Marlboro or Dillon County. Preference is given to undergraduate students with financial need and a major concentration area in business administration or education.

The A. William and Lee Marner Scholarship. Established by Lee Marner to honor the memory of her husband A. William “Bill” Marner who attended Francis Marion University later in life, this scholarship was established to perpetuate Bill’s legacy and assist students in pursuing and completing degree requirements in the physical sciences, mathematics, or fine arts at FMU. First preference will be given to a student with a declared major in either the physical sciences or mathematics, and second preference will be given to a student majoring in a field offered through the Department of Fine Arts.

The McClam Scholarship. Established in November 1984 in honor of the McClam family, particularly the donor’s mother and father, Rose S. and David P. McClam, this scholarship is an award made to assist worthy and deserving students from rural areas of South Carolina with preference to students from the Pee Dee region.

The I.P. McWhite Scholarship. Established in June 1985, this memorial scholarship is an award made to assist deserving students, preferably from lower Florence County.

The Frances Corry Means Memorial Scholarship. Established in June 1994 by family and friends to honor the memory of Frances Corry Means who served as Acquisitions Librarian at Francis Marion University from July 1, 1970, through June 30, 1980, this scholarship is an award made to a student who demonstrates financial need.

The Dolores J. Miller Endowed Scholarship. Established in August 2018 by Ms. Delores J. Miller, this scholarship provides opportunities for deserving students to pursue a degree from Francis Marion University. Dolores J. Miller moved to Florence, South Carolina, upon the request of Dr. Walter Douglas Smith, the founding president of Francis Marion College, prior to the founding of the institution on July 1, 1970. As part of the founding staff and faculty of Francis Marion College, Ms. Miller played a seminal role during the early days of what is now Francis Marion University. The scholarship recipient must be a full-time student in good standing and a resident of South Carolina. The recipient must demonstrate financial need, and first preference is that the recipient is a first-generation college student.

The William C. Moran Scholarship. Established in June 1992 by Francis Marion University faculty, staff, and friends, this scholarship is an award made to deserving Francis Marion University students.

The Lenna V. Morrow Memorial Scholarship. Established in October 1986 by family and friends of Dr. Morrow, a member of the Francis Marion University English Department, this scholarship is an award made to a junior or senior majoring in English showing promise in his or her discipline.

The NationsBank / Chip Ingram Memorial Scholarship. Established by NationsBank in November 1993 in memory of Benjamin W. (Chip) Ingram III, this scholarship is an award made to a student enrolled in the business program at Francis Marion University.

The National Bank of South Carolina Scholarship. Established in June 2005 for students from South Carolina with financial need, this scholarship is an award made to a student who is majoring in business and demonstrates financial need.

The Hal Norton Scholarship. Established in July 1986 by an anonymous donor to honor Rev. Hal Norton of the Garden City Chapel in Garden City, South Carolina, this scholarship is an award made to deserving students at Francis Marion University.

The John J. Odorisio Business Endowed Scholarship. Established in December 2022 by John J. Odorisio, this scholarship provides opportunities for deserving students to pursue a degree from Francis Marion University. The scholarship recipient must be a Business major with a 3.5 Grade Point Average. The recipient must also be a full-time student who demonstrates financial need. Preference will be given to a first-generation student.

The Palmetto Brick Company Scholarship. Established in March 2005, this scholarship is an award based on financial need for a student from Chesterfield or Marlboro counties, with preference given to children of employees of Palmetto Brick.

The Pee Dee Claims Association Scholarship. Established in July 1995, this scholarship is an award to a student from the Pee Dee area who displays an interest in entering the insurance profession.

The Pee Dee Electric Cooperative, Inc. Endowed Scholarship. Established in July 2022 by the Pee Dee Electric Cooperative Board of Trustees, this scholarship assists the dependents of its membership to pursue and complete degree requirements at Francis Marion University. The recipient must be a dependent of a member owner of Pee Dee Electric Cooperative and hold a 3.0 grade point average. Preference is given to a student who has demonstrated financial need and who has a major concentration in Accounting, Business Administration, Engineering, or Marketing.

The Pee Dee Orthopaedic Associates P.A. Scholarship. Established in September 2002 to recognize and assist outstanding students, this scholarship award is designated for a student majoring in a science-related field.

Dr. Leroy “Pete” Peterson Endowed Scholarship. Established in January 2008 by the FMU African-American Faculty and Staff Coalition, this scholarship is an award given to a minority US Citizen majoring in one of the natural sciences.

The Donald Finklea Poston Endowed Scholarship. Established in August 2021, this scholarship honors the memory of Donald Finklea Poston. Donald was married to Jewel Ann Poston for 35 years. After Jewel’s passing in 2003, Donald married Kathleen Matthews Poston. Donald and Kathleen were married for ten years. The scholarship recipient must be an Education major and a graduate of any Florence County high school. Their cumulative GPA must be 3.5 or higher, and the recipient must demonstrate financial need.

The W.O. Powers Scholarship. Established in December 2010 by James A. Brown to recognize the longstanding support and commitment W.O. “Billy” Powers has had to Francis Marion University. Mr. powers has been a staunch ambassador for conveying the importance of FMU to the region and the state. First preference goes to a recipient from the Pee Dee Region with a permanent residence in Sardis or Timmonsville. The recipient must be admitted into the Bachelors of Business Administration program with a concentration in Management.

The Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Endowed Fund. Established in February 2020, this scholarship provides opportunities for deserving students to pursue a Primary Care Practitioner Graduate Degree in Nursing at Francis Marion University. Students must be full-time and in good standing and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. Students must be accepted into the Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program, be South Carolina residents, and demonstrate financial need.

The Joe, Sandy, and Gregg Privette Scholarship. Established in 2007 by the estate of Mrs. Elva H. Privette whose family resided in Florence and owned Privette Music Company, this scholarship is an award for a student majoring in music who demonstrates financial need.

The Lorie Marie Pruett Nursing Scholarship. Established in April 2012 by local community leaders to honor the memory of Lorie Pruett who was killed tragically in an automobile accident, this scholarship is designated for a student in the Nursing Program who is from the Pee Dee area and has financial need.

The Ted Revis—B.G. Waldrop Scholarship. Established in January 1997 by Brian Waldrop and family, this scholarship is an award to assist students who do not qualify for federal financial aid or other financial assistance.

The Gail Ness Richardson Scholarship. Established in January 1992 by Mrs. Gail Ness Richardson, this scholarship is an award made to assist a deserving Francis Marion University student.

The Roche Carolina Scholarship. Established in April 2002 by Roche Carolina Inc., this scholarship provides an endowed fund for students majoring in chemistry. Each recipient must be a graduate from a public or private high school in Florence or Darlington County and demonstrate financial need.

The Roche Carolina Exchange Program Scholarship. Established in April 2002, this scholarship will further educational opportunities in Cuernevaca, Mexico, in the field of chemistry. The scholarship recipient will have a major concentration area in chemistry.

The Tom Roop Scholarship. Established in 1986 by former biology majors, this scholarship recognizes Tom Roop’s skills as teacher and adviser. The award will be made to a biology major at Francis Marion University.

The Nat Rosenfeld Tennis Scholarship. Established in January of 1992, this endowed scholarship honors Nat Rosenfeld, the first tennis coach (1964-1970) at Francis Marion College.

The Santee Electric Cooperative Teacher Training Endowed Scholarship. Established in January 2001 by Santee Electric Cooperative in Kingstree, S.C., this scholarship shall be awarded to students majoring in education or any other major leading to teacher preparation. Recipient(s) must have a permanent residence with a parent or legal guardian who is a Santee Electric Cooperative member located in one of the following service areas: Clarendon County, Florence County, Georgetown County, or Williamsburg County.

The Santee Cooper Industrial Engineering Endowed Scholarship. Established to assist students, this scholarship will be awarded to those pursuing and completing degree requirements in the Industrial Engineering Program at Francis Marion University.

The Kevin M. Sattele, MD Scholarship. Established by Dr. Keven Sattele and Mrs. Lori Sattele in December 2010, this scholarship is awarded to a student who is pursuing a degree in biology.

The Martin F. and Leah Stooks Schnibben Scholarship. Established in October 1982 by Mr. Martin F. Schnibben, this scholarship is an award made to recognize the academic merit and achievements of selected Francis Marion University students from Florence County.

The Dr. Louise T. Scott Distinguished Educator Scholarship. Established in November 2002 by her family in recognition of her contribution and dedication to education in the Pee Dee region, this scholarship is an award designated for a student who is majoring in education.

The Honorable Robert Claude Scott, Jr. Endowed Memorial Scholarship. Established in May 2022 to provide opportunities for deserving students to pursue a degree from Francis Marion University. The late Robert Claude Scott, Jr. was a highly decorated combat veteran of WWII who, post-war, became a nationally known public-school educator through his efforts to provide opportunities to learn and prosper for all students across South Carolina. He pioneered many wonderful secondary school programs across South Carolina during his long-term service as a Board Member and as the Chair of the State Board of Education. He further founded the nationally known and life changing Pee Dee Education Center in 1967, and it continues to serve as a catalyst for delivering education services to Francis Marion University and the Pee Dee region’s 19-member school districts. Among his many initiatives were the creation of the Pee Dee Math and Science Hub, the Minority Recruitment Teacher Center, and the comprehensive school health programs in each school district. For his many extraordinary contributions to the Pee Dee, the State of South Carolina, and to the nation, Robert Claude Scott, Jr. was awarded the Order of the Palmetto, the State’s high civilian award, as well as the National School Boards Association’s Lifetime Public Service Award. Scholarship recipient should be an Education major with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference given to a graduate of the Pee Dee Education Center’s 19-member school district. Preference to any student who has served actively in the United States military or is serving part-time in the United States military reserves or state national guard. Preference given to a first-generation student.

The D. L. Scurry Foundation Scholarship. Established in 1977 by the D. L. Scurry Foundation, Greenville, this scholarship is an award made to deserving students from South Carolina.

The Carlton Sellers Endowed Scholarship. Established in October 2021 by the president of Francis Marion University, Dr. L. Fred Carter, on behalf of the FMU African-American Faculty and Staff Coalition, this scholarship honors Mr. Carlton Sellers and his contributions to the Coalition and the university at-large. Mr. Sellers was a dedicated employee of Francis Marion University for over 40 years. He joined the staff of the then Francis Marion College on March 19, 1980, and remained at the university until his retirement on August 30, 2021. During his tenure, Mr. Sellers served as an instrumental member of the university’s grounds crew, and for his last 20 years, he served as a supervisor leading his own grounds team. His congenial style, strong work ethic, and positive outlook earned the respect and admiration of students, staff, faculty, and administration. Future generations of students will be inspired by Mr. Seller’s life of service, commitment, and devotion to this state, community, and university. Scholarship recipients should be historically underserved full-time students in good standing who demonstrate financial need. Recipients should be South Carolina residents, with first preference being given to those from the Pee Dee Region.

The Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, Jay Williams Memorial Scholarship. Established in January 1979 by the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity Chapter of Francis Marion University, this scholarship is an award made to recognize and reward the scholastic merit and attainments of a deserving Francis Marion University student.

The Tom Sills Scholarship. Established in January 2000 by family, friends, and colleagues in memory of Thomas Wiett Sills who served Francis Marion University with distinction from June 1, 1980 until his death on May 25, 1998, this scholarship is an award for a part-time student who is employed as a public school teacher’s aide and who is pursuing professional teacher certification, or for a student who is enrolled in the teacher education program.

The Steven C. Sims Endowed Scholarship. Established in October 2021 by the president of Francis Marion University, Dr. L. Fred Carter, on behalf of the FMU African-American Faculty and Staff Coalition, this scholarship honors Steven Sims and his contributions to the Coalition and university at-large. Steven grew up in rural Marion County, SC, and his career at FMU has seen him transition from student worker to classified staff to tenured faculty, teaching part-time as a University Life instructor and participating enthusiastically in faculty governance. Steven is proud of the opportunities and experiences he has gained during his time at FMU. He believes strongly in giving back to others as well as being an active participant in the university and its advancement. He played an active role in the founding of the African-American Faculty Staff Coalition in 1995 and has remained active in the organization since. “My mother and grandmother raised me to believe that your ‘work’ will speak for you, but to have a fully endowed scholarship created and named in my honor humbles me beyond words,” Steven said. “To know that long after I have gone, students will receive a financial opportunity which could set into motion a trajectory that could potentially plot their future lives. It is my sincere hope that each recipient will know the value of service and the necessity of sacrifice.” Scholarship recipients will be full-time students in good standing, have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher, and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to historically underserved students who are U.S. Citizens.

The Drs. Sarawadee and Orachun Sitti Scholarship. Established in January 2002, this scholarship is an award for a junior or senior who is majoring in physics, chemistry, or biology.

The David R. and Helen A. Smith Scholarship. Established in February 2020 by the Smiths, this scholarship is designated for extremely needy students. Recipients must be South Carolina residents and Pell Grant eligible full-time students in good standing. Recipients must demonstrate extreme financial need.

The Ralston E. Jr. and Cora Taylor Younges Smith Scholarship. Established in August 1979 by Mrs. Cora T. Y. Smith, this scholarship is an award made to recognize the scholastic merits of a deserving Francis Marion University student majoring in history or minoring in government and politics.

The Wayne G. Smith Memorial Scholarship. Established in August 2004 to honor the memory of Wayne Smith, a Francis Marion student at the time of his death in an automobile accident, this scholarship will assist outstanding students majoring in engineering. The recipient must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. 

The Nellie Cooke Sparrow Memorial Scholarship. Established in December 1988 by the Sparrow Family, this scholarship is an award made to assist deserving Francis Marion University students residing in Florence County School District 3.

JC and Nettlease Spivey Scholarship. Established in November 2020, this scholarship was created in honor of JC Spivey and in memory of Nettlease Spivey. They are from Horry County and were firm believers in their children and grandchildren furthering their education. It is the hope of the donor that this scholarship will help a student from Horry County further their education and pursue their life goals. Recipients must be an Horry County resident with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

The Texie A. Young Stackhouse Education Trust. Established in 1974 to honor the memory of Texie A. Young Stackhouse, this scholarship is for the “education, support, and welfare of needy, deprived, and deserving young men and women.”

The Thomas C. Stanton Scholarship. Established in July 1993 by friends in honor of Dr. Thomas C. Stanton, the second president of Francis Marion University, this scholarship is an award made to benefit the sons and daughters of single parents in Florence County.

The W.C. and Sara Stanton Scholarship. Established in December 2000 by Mr. W.C. Stanton, a former Francis Marion University Board of Trustees member, and his wife, Mrs. Sara Stanton, this scholarship is an award made to a student seeking a degree in nursing who resides in Dillon, Marlboro, or Chesterfield county.

The Stokes Family Scholarship. Established in January 2023, this scholarship combines the J. Howard Stokes Memorial Scholarship, the Helen Rhoad Stokes Memorial Scholarship, and the Stokes Family Fund. Dr. J. Howard Stokes presented the deed in which the original 100 acres of land were transferred to the State of South Carolina for the creation of Francis Marion College, and he is celebrated as one of the founders of Francis Marion University. After his passing, his family and friends established the J. Howard Stokes Memorial Scholarship in 1982. In the same year, Dr. J. Howard Stokes, Jr., Dr. D. Parker Stokes, and Dr. Hunter R. Stokes established the Helen Rhoad Stokes Memorial Scholarship to honor her memory. The Stokes Family Fund was created by Dr. D. Parker Stokes and Dr. Hunter R. Stokes after the 2021 deaths of their brother, J. Howard Stokes, Jr., and their sister-in-law, Peggy Stokes. Family and friends of the Stokes family provided memorial donations to establish that fund. Two awards will be given each year. The first award will be given to a student majoring in Biology, Pre-Healthcare Track, and the second will be given to a student majoring in Elementary Education. First preferences will be given to students from Florence County, and upperclassmen must maintain a 2.8 GPA or higher. Recipients must demonstrate financial need.

The Linda M. Sullen Endowed Scholarship. Established in March 2021 by the president of Francis Marion University, Dr. Luther F. Carter, on behalf of the FMU African-American Faculty and Staff Coalition, this scholarship honors Linda M. Sullen. Linda was born and raised in Florence, SC, and she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology in 2009 from Francis Marion University. She has been employed by the University for over 44 years. During her time at FMU, she has accomplished much, but what she cherishes the most is being a founding member of the African American Faculty and Staff Coalition, which was established in 1995. “Having a scholarship named in my honor is beyond my wildest dreams as an accomplishment at the University,” Linda said. “Students hold a very special place in my heart. I am so thankful to know that when I am no longer here, I still will be a part of giving back.”

The Marty Thames Memorial Scholarship. Established in January 1998 by Billy and Jo Thames to honor the memory of their daughter, Marty Thames, who was a student at FMU at the time of her death. She lost her life in an automobile accident caused by a drunk driver in November 1996. Marty was actively involved at FMU, serving as a cheerleader and a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. The scholarship is designated for a student from Sumter County.

The Marty Thames / Zeta Tau Alpha Scholarship. Established in August 1998 in memory of Marty Thames, an FMU cheerleader and member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority who lost her life in an automobile accident caused by a drunk driver in November of 1996, this scholarship is an award made to members of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority who maintain a grade point average of 3.0.

The Urma Isgett Thompson Scholarship. Established in January 1999 to honor the memory of Urma Isgett Thompson by members of Friendship United Methodist Church, this scholarship is awarded to students pursuing a minor in music and maintaining a grade point average of 3.0.

The Toledo-Carolina, Inc. Scholarship. Established during the Campaign for Excellence through a generous pledge by Toledo Carolina, this scholarship is an award given to a student from the Pee Dee area who is majoring in English and who has demonstrated financial need. Preference is given to students who are not receiving other scholarships such as LIFE or HOPE.

The Wells Fargo Bank Scholarship. Established in 1974, this scholarship is an award made primarily on the basis of scholarly promise to a student entering or in the Honors Program.

The Wells Fargo Advisors Scholarship. Established in August 1998 by Wheat First Union in Florence, S.C., and the Wheat First Union Foundation, this scholarship is an award to a student majoring in finance, business economics, or management with a 3.0 or higher grade point average.

Virtical Company Endowed Scholarship. Established in December 2020 by Lamar Younginer, CEO and Co-Founder of Virtical Education, LLC, and Derk Riechers, Co-Founder and COO of Virtical Education, this scholarship provides opportunities for deserving students to pursue a degree from Francis Marion University. Mr. Younginer and Mr. Riechers have over 25 years of online education experience, and they developed a program that evaluates online courses, trains faculty in best practices in online education, and assesses overall effectiveness. Recipients of this scholarship must be from South Carolina, must have a GPA between 2.0 and 2.99, and must be an Economics major.

The Amelia Mellichamp Wallace Memorial Scholarship. Established in June 1994 by Mrs. Amelia Wallace Vernon and Mrs. Kenneth Sallenger in honor of their mother, this scholarship is an award made to a deserving student.

The Walter G. and Joseph W. Wallace Memorial Scholarship. Established in July 1974 by Mrs. Walter G. Wallace, this scholarship is an award made on the basis of achievement to a freshman or upperclassman.

WebsterRogers LLP Scholarship. Established in October 2002 by WebsterRogers, LLP, this scholarship is an award designated for a student from eastern South Carolina who has demonstrated financial need and is majoring in accounting.

The Wellman Scholarship. Established in May 1977, these scholarships are awarded to students indicating a sincere interest in the study of business as a major or minor and coming from a school district serving Johnsonville, Poston, Hannah, Pamplico, Prospect, Lake City, Britton’s Neck, Pleasant Hill, Battery Park, or Hemingway.

The Clarissa White Scholarship. Established in July 2002 by Pee Dee Pathology Associates P.A. to encourage students to pursue careers in health-related fields, this scholarship is an award for a junior or senior from the Pee Dee region.

The Chris J. Yahnis Scholarship. Established in June 2000 by Mr. Chris J. Yahnis through a generous endowed gift, this scholarship is an award in varying amounts up to full fees to assist a deserving student who demonstrates financial need. This scholarship was specifically designated to help students who would not be able to attend college without this need-based scholarship.

The Ted Zuppa Scholarship. Established in October 2010, this scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Ted Zuppa by his wife Evon, daughter Carol Ann Good, and son Chris Zuppa. Ted Zuppa was an inaugural faculty member of FMU who served 29 years as the cataloging librarian in the James A. Rogers Library. This scholarship is awarded to a first generation college student.
