Four FMU professors honored for teaching, service, research, governance

Four Francis Marion University faculty members were honored for outstanding individual work during the past year at an annual faculty recognition banquet Thursday night.

Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Jeffrey A. Steinmetz received the Award of Excellence in Teaching; Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Will T. Daniel received the Award of Excellence in Scholarship and Research; and Associate Professor of Biology Lisa A. Pike received the Award of Excellence in Service.

Mamie Cole Gray Professor of Mathematics Dr. James T. Ramey was also honored with the Charlene Wages Shared Governance Award, a special award presented by the FMU chapter of the American Association of University Professors. The shared governance award is given to a faculty member who has made significant contributions to shared governance – the balance between faculty and administrative leadership at a university – at FMU.

Dr. Fred Carter, president of FMU, said the recipients were exemplars of the overall excellence of the university’s faculty.

“We are all delighted to see Lisa, Will and Jeff receive these awards,” says Carter. “Our three colleagues are among the finest members of the FMU faculty, and their work reflects the highest standards for research, teaching and service- the core accomplishments for our profession. ”

Steinmetz earned his B.S. in Biology and English from Allegheny College, and his Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign.

Daniel received his B.A. in Political Science from Wake Forest University, and both his M.A. Political Science and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Pittsburgh.

Pike earned her B.S. in Biological Sciences from State University of New York – Binghamton, and her M.S. in Marine Biology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Ramey received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Clemson University and has been a member of the FMU faculty since 1974.
