FMU has the look and the feel of a small, liberal arts college with all the benefits of a state-supported, comprehensive university. We are located on 300 acres just east of Florence, SC. We are an hour’s drive from Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand and four hours from the Blue Ridge Mountains. With a metropolitan-area population of 125,000, the city of Florence is nestled alongside Interstate Highway 95, the main north-south corridor from the New England area to Miami, and at the eastern end of Interstate Highway 20. Amtrak, bus service, and a regional airport serve the city.

We were founded in 1970 and our campus has modern classrooms and residence facilities, which provide a great learning environment for our students. We have the largest library in the northeast section of SC.
The Community Relations Office is responsible for maintaining positive town and gown relations and works with the corporate community, local chambers of commerce, civic organizations, and state and local government agencies on projects designed for the betterment of the University and the region it serves.

Hewn Timber Cabins

Location. The hewn-timber cabins, ca. 1836, are located on Francis Marion University campus, 200 yards from Highway 76/301, on Wallace Woods Road (Gate Six).

Significance. These are two of eight cabins that were built by African Americans to house African-American slaves who were brought to this area to raise cotton. The quality of the woodcraft, especially the full-dovetailed corners, shows that the builders were skilled craftsmen who took pride in their work.  The cabins are on the National Register of Historic Places.
