Francis Marion hosts Spartans on softball diamond

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University softball team will play host to 19th-ranked USC Upstate for a key Peach Belt Conference doubleheader, Wednesday (March 14) at 1 p.m. on the FMU Softball Field.  Admission is free.

The Patriots are 23-5 and have won their last 10 games, the squad’s longest winning streak since an 18-game streak in 2003. USC Upstate is 18-5 and both squads are among four teams tied for second place in the PBC standings at 6-2.

Francis Marion received votes in last week’s NFCA Top 25 poll, and may well break into the rankings this week.

Senior outfielder Jenna Sexton batted .522 last week and leads the team with a .406 season average. Junior shortstop Allie Aleman is batting .391 with nine home runs and 26 runs batted in. Her nine round-trippers are two shy of the Patriot single-season record.

Freshman left-hander Michaela Wolf paces the FMU pitching staff with a 16-3 record and a 2.13 earned run average. Sophomore righty Serena Lim is 4-1, while senior Jessica Johnson is 3-1.

FMU leads the all-time series 39-29, but the Spartans swept three games from the Patriots last season.
