#24 Patriots conclude softball regular season

FLORENCE, SC - The 24th-ranked Francis Marion University women's softball team will conclude its regular-season schedule with a pair of doubleheaders this weekend. FMU will play at Coker College on Saturday (April 14) at 2 p.m., before hosting Peach Belt Conference foe North Georgia College & State University on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Patriots enter the weekend with a 32-12 overall record and are tied for fifth in the PBC standings with a 10-8 mark. FMU is also ranked eighth in this week’s South Atlantic Region Poll.

Depending on the outcome of other PBC contests this week, FMU could move up as high as third in the conference standings.

Between games of the Sunday’s twinbill, Francis Marion will recognize its three seniors: first baseman Janine Allen, right-handed pitcher Jessica Johnson, and outfielder Jenna Sexton.

Allen has appeared in 183 career games with a .350 average, 26 home runs, and 127 runs batted in. Her career total of 46 doubles is one shy of the team record and her 26 home runs are four short of the Patriot career mark. Allen was named the PBC Player of the Week on Monday. Johnson owns a career pitching record of 50-20 with a 2.10 earned run average and 355 strikeouts in 490.2 career innings pitched. Sexton has played in 188 career games with a .306 average, eight home runs, and 65 RBIs. Her 62 career walks are six shy of the Patriot record in that category.

The three seniors have helped lead FMU to a four-year combined record of 132-59.

The No. 24 national ranking represents Francis Marion’s fifth consecutive week appearing in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top 25 poll.

Five of Francis Marion’s last nine losses have been to nationally ranked opponents.
