Macy adds three to Patriot Hoops Program

FLORENCE, S.C. – First-year Francis Marion University women’s basketball coach Heather Macy has announced the addition of three transfers to the Patriot program: Jennifer Dyer of Wake Forest, N.C., Rita Grayson of New Orleans, La., and Kevina Ransom of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. All three will attend FMU this fall, with Dyer and Ransom having two years of eligibility and Grayson one season.

Dyer, a 5-9 guard, is transferring from Rollins College. Last season, she averaged 9.4 points and 5.2 rebounds per game for a 24-7 Tars squad that won the Sunshine State Conference regular-season title and advanced to the NCAA Division II national tournament. She was second on the team in assists (2.5 per game) and steals (2.4 per game), and ranks 12th on school’s career list for three-point field goals made.

As a freshman, she averaged 6.7 ppg and 3.2 rpg.

She is a former All-State and All-Conference performer at Wake Forest-Rolesville High School.

“Jennifer is one of the most competitive players I have ever met,” Macy said. “She will excel in the system we run at FMU. Her ability to pass and her knowledge of the game will make her an immediate contributor and huge asset to the program.

Grayson, a 5-9 guard-forward, is transferring from the State University of West Georgia. This past year, she led the 12-15 Wolves in scoring (10.9 ppg), while also averaging 4.1 rpg. She also led her team in three-pointers made.

She is a former All-Conference and Academic All-Conference selection at Seminole Community College, where she played for two years. She was an All-District performer at John Ehret High School in Mancro, La.

“Rita is a very versatile player who can score both inside and outside. She can make the three or take a defender off the dribble. Her toughness and hard-nosed play is exactly what we need for the upcoming year.

Ransom, a 5-5 point guard, is transferring from Louisburg College. This past season, she averaged 11.6 points, 9.1 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.6 steals per game for a Hurricane team that averaged nearly 89 ppg. She garnered Region 10 Player of the Year honors and was an honorable mention All-American. As a freshman, she averaged 12.2 points, 6.7 assists, 5.2 steals, and 3.8 rebounds per game. In her two seasons, she compiled a school record 434 assists.

Ransom was a four-year starter at Northwest Halifax High School.

“Kevina is the perfect point guard and will be an extension of the coaching staff on the floor. She possesses incredible court vision. She can score, but her ability to penetrate and distribute the ball makes everyone around her better. We are excited to attract a player of her ability to Francis Marion.

“All three of these signees will bring a winning attitude to FMU, and all are competitors. They will all make an immediate impact on the court. They are also well-rounded student-athletes that will be a positive force in the FMU community.”

Macy inherits a squad that loses no starters from last year’s 6-22 team. FMU earlier announced the signing of freshman 5-10 forward Ashley Abed of Oakton, Va., and the addition of 5-6 guard Shanquanna Long of Durham, N.C. Macy expects to announce more members of the 2007-08 recruiting class in the coming weeks.
