Francis Marion University Alumnus Harry D. Patterson of Florence was recently appointed to the Florence County Disabilities and Special Needs Board by Gov. Mark Sanford.
His term will last until March 2010. Patterson is a lifetime resident of Florence and received his bachelor of general science degree from FMU where he has worked part-time for 19 years.
He has previously served as a South Carolina representative to the White House Conference on Handicaps. He is a board member of the S.C. Administrative & Professionals Systems for Disabled Individuals and the Mayor's Committee for Employment for the Handicapped. He has also served on the Board of Directors of Florence County Disability's Foundation since 2004. The Florence County DSNB employs more than 350 employees and is responsible for the delivery of services to more than 1,000 people with disabilities and special needs including mental retardation, autism, head and spinal cord injuries and other lifelong disabilities in community settings throughout Florence County.
The board of seven members is recommended by the Florence County legislative delegation and appointed by the governor.
