Francis Marion Trail Commission to meet at FMU, Nov. 13

FLORENCE – The Francis Marion Trail Commission will hold its regular meeting at Francis Marion University, Tuesday, Nov. 13.

The meeting will begin at 5 p.m. in the president’s board room of the Stokes Administration Building.

The South Carolina General Assembly passed a bill creating a commission for the purpose of establishing a heritage trail across the Pee Dee and Lowcountry in honor of Gen. Francis Marion of Revolutionary War fame.

The commission works to establish a Francis Marion Heritage and Tourism Trail – the first of its kind for the Pee Dee. The commission is authorized to solicit and raise funds for the trail from public and private sources, and in coordination with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, to designate the location and route of the trail to be included in the department’s State Trail System.

There are seven members of the commission, including the president of Francis Marion University, or his designee. Other members are: the director of Parks, Recreation and Tourism; one member appointed by the President Pro Tempore of the Senate; one member appointed by the Speaker of the House; one member appointed by the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee; one member appointed by the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee; and one member appointed by the governor. Commissioners, who serve four-year terms, elect their own chairman to serve a two-year term.

For more information, contact Robert C. Barrett, executive director of the FMTC at 843-229-1136.
