Leatherman, Timmons Receive Alumni Awards from FMU Biology Program

          FLORENCE---Karen Ann Leatherman, president and owner of the Fitness Forum, and Melissa M. Timmons, chemistry and physics teacher at Johnsonville High School, have been honored by the Francis Marion University Department of Biology with outstanding alumni awards.

          Leatherman received the John S. Boyce Award, while Timmons was presented the Lawrence Swails Award. These distinguished alumni awards, named after the Biology Department’s first two chairmen, were presented during a reception Nov. 15 on the FMU campus. This is the second of what is planned to be an annual recognition of outstanding graduates of the biology program.

        Leatherman received her bachelor’s degree in biology from FMU in 1980 and went on to complete her master’s degree in exercise physiology from the University of South Carolina in 1982. She has maintained a certification as an American College of Sports Medicine Exercise Specialist from 1986 to present and one as an American College of Sports Medicine Fitness Instructor from 1982 to present.

       She has been the health maintenance services director for Carolinas Hospital System; vice-president of ancillary services; and vice president of community health and occupational medicine. Prior to her work for the Carolinas, she was the health and wellness facility director for Bruce Hospital System.

        Timmons received her undergraduate degree in biology in 1991. She will receive her master’s in general education from Cambridge College in December. She received national board certification in adolescent and young adulthood science in 2003.

       She was the 2004-05 Teacher of the Year at Johnsonville High School. She was also awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science for the state in 2005. In addition, Timmons was awarded the S.C. Chemistry Teacher of the Year Award in 2007.

       Timmons has been married for 21 years to Darren Timmons. The two have three children; Josh (a junior at FMU), Laura (a sophomore at Johnsonville High School) and Jeffery (a seventh grader at Johnsonville Middle School.
