Musical Performer to headline MLK Celebration at FMU Jan. 10
Take a front row seat in the McNair Auditorium at Francis Marion University as performer Yewande Austin takes the audience to a place of cultural understanding through her socially charged brand of alternative soul music.
The public is invited to attend the 10th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration to be held on Thursday, Jan. 10, at 6:30 p.m. at no cost. This year’s theme is “Bridging the Gap: Rhythms, Rhymes & Races in America.”
Combining her passion for music with business experience as the former director of outreach programs for Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts and as marketing manager for HBO’s corporate headquarters, Austin established the Change Rocks Institute to produce innovative educational programs that would encourage greater racial tolerance, cultural understanding and youth empowerment.
This year’s celebration will also include an essay/poem contest honoring the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. The winning essay/poem will be read at the MLK Celebration and the winner will receive a cash award and local recognition. All entries must be postmarked by Dec. 31.
