The Chi Theta Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, inducted four new members into its chapter at Francis Marion University, March 22.
Wendy Caldwell, associate professor of Spanish and modern languages, applied for the charter last year as a vehicle through which students of Spanish at FMU could be honored for their achievements.
The society was founded in 1919 at the University of California, Berkeley. It is the largest foreign language honor society in the world. Students are selected for membership based on the following criteria:
- demonstrate a genuine interest in the Spanish language, literature and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world;
- maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in their Spanish studies, including the study of Hispanic literature or culture; and
- rank in the upper 35 percent of their graduating class.
