“Fools” is a comic fable that takes place in Kulyenshikov, a remote Ukrainian village, during the late 1800s. Although the village seems quiet and peaceful, all of the residents have been cursed with chronic stupidity by Vladimir Yousekevich.
The play focuses on Leon Tolchinsky, an ambitious young schoolteacher who is hired to educate Sophia Zubrinsky, the daughter of the village’s doctor. Leon is lovestruck by Sophia, but he has 24 hours to break the curse by educating Sophia, or he will become a victim of the curse as well. The curse can only be broken if he can educate Sophia, or if she marries Gregor Yousekevitch, the last descendent of Vladimir Yousekevich.
