FMU offers public tours of Hewn-Timber Cabins, Sept. 11

FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University will offer public tours of its Hewn-Timber Cabins, Tuesday, Sept. 11, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Visitors should enter the campus on Wallace Woods Road through Gate 6 from U.S. Hwy. 76/301.

The Hewn-Timber Cabins were built around 1836 by slaves who then occupied them. Only two of the original eight cabins are still standing. In 1974, these two remaining cabins were placed on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1980, nine acres of land were donated to FMU as a permanent site for their location.

Though traditionally open to the public on the second Wednesday of each month, the day has been changed. The cabins are now open to the public on the second Tuesday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. instead. To see the cabins at other times, persons must make an appointment with Karl McAlister at 843-661-1311. More information about the cabins is available at or by sending an e-mail to
