FMU Center of Excellence to hold fall workshop

The Francis Marion University Center of Excellence to Prepare Teachers of Children of Poverty will hold its fall workshop on Saturday, Sept. 29, in McNair Science Building’s Chapman Auditorium from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the FMU campus.

The theme of this year’s workshop is “How 2: Classroom Strategies that Work!” Sessions will focus on research-based classroom strategies and best practices in the following areas as they relate to the needs and abilities of children of poverty:

  • Metacognition: Strategies that Promote Thinking Skills
  • Classroom Management and Student Motivation
  • Assessment and Evaluation
  • Culture of Poverty
  • Language Development and Literacy
  • Curriculum Development and Implementation
  • Differentiated Instruction
  • School, Family, and Community Connections
  • Strategies that Promote Partnerships

To register for the workshop, go to www.fmucenterofexcellence.org/fmu/fs_workshop.asp. Registration is free to all partner district educators.Professional development recertification hours will be awarded to all participants.

Francis Marion University’s School of Education was awarded a five year grant that established on our campus a Center of Excellence to Prepare Teachers of Children of Poverty. The grant includes a component that supports staff development and in-service training for teachers in our region.

The activities which are the subjects of this document are produced, in part, under grants from the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education and the U.S. Department of Education under the auspices of the Improving Teacher Quality Higher Education and the Centers of Excellence Grants Programs.
