Best elected to lead FMU faculty

FLORENCE, S.C. – D. Keith Best, professor of theatre arts, was recently elected chairman of the general faculty at Francis Marion University. He replaces professor of English Kenneth M. Autrey, who has served as faculty chair since 2004.

“I am honored to serve in this capacity, and I hope to live up to the standards of the previous chairs,” Best said.

Elections for vice chairman and secretary of the Faculty Senate will be held in April. Those two persons will also serve in the same positions for the general faculty. The chairman, vice chairman and secretary will begin their one-year terms July 1.

A professor of theatre arts, Best received the Shared Governance Award in 2005 for his commitment to the principles of shared governance between the faculty, administration and the board of trustees.

He is a resident of Florence and has been a member of the FMU faculty since 1993. A native of Valdosta, Ga., he earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts in theatre at Valdosta State University in 1986 and a master’s in fine arts at the University of Louisville in 1993.
