FMU to feature Western Film Series, March 25

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University English Department will bring John Ford’s “The Searchers” on March 25.

The western film features actor John Wayne and may be viewed at 3:30 p.m. in the Cauthen Educational Media Center’s Lowrimore Auditorium. There will be an 8 p.m. showing outdoors on the Hyman Fine Arts Center Plaza, weather permitting. Admission is free and open to the public.

The Searchers (1956) is considered by many to be a true American masterpiece of filmmaking, and the best, most influential, and perhaps most-admired film of director John Ford. The film's complex, deeply nuanced themes included racism, individuality, the American character, and the opposition between civilization (exemplified by homes, caves and other domestic interiors) and the untamed frontier wilderness.
