FLORENCE

– The Francis Marion University ARCH (Advancing Rural Community Health) Program will sponsor a series of free health screenings for the general public at the following locations:
  • Friday, May 23 – Britton’s Neck Community Center, Highway 908, Britton’s Neck, 1-5 p.m.
  • Friday, May 30 – Community Development Corporation of Marlboro County, Plaza Building, 106 E. Market St., Bennettsville, 1-5 p.m.
  • Friday, June 6 – Williamsburg County School District Annex, 500 N. Academy St., Kingstree, 1-5 p.m.
  • Friday, June 13 – Apostolic Faith Tabernacle, 500 W. Marion St., Florence, 1-5 p.m.

The screenings will consist of height, weight and blood pressure check, fingerstick blood sugar, lab work for cholesterol and kidney function and a health survey. Diabetics will also have a hemoglobin A1C drawn (a test that measures diabetic control over the previous three months). Men over 50 (and high-risk men over 40) will have PSAs drawn (a blood screening for prostate cancer). Assistance with completing a Universal Medication Form will also be provided for all patients who bring their medications.

The ARCH Program was established at FMU to provide a variety of health awareness services in rural communities including health screenings, health awareness seminars and lifestyle education programs. Under the direction of staff physician, Paul DeMarco, students enrolled in programs leading to careers involving health care, mental health, social work, and related fields are involved in providing these services, with emphasis on rural communities in the Pee Dee Region.

The programs and services are provided in community-based venues, including schools, community centers, churches, civic organizations and other appropriate locations.

For more information about the screening or the ARCH program, contact the ARCH office at 843-661-1846 or email swrchp@fmarion.edu. Visit the ARCH website at www.fmarion.edu/students/arch.
