FMU student interns at 2008 Democratic National Convention

FLORENCE – Nadiyah Batiste, a Francis Marion University junior majoring in early childhood education, is interning at the 2008 Democratic National Convention to be held in Denver, Col., Aug. 25-28. Batiste, who leads the FMU contingent of Obama for President and introduced Michelle Obama when she spoke on campus in January, arrived in Denver early August and serves as part of the Podium Operations Team.

A native of New Orleans, Batiste caught the attention of FMU Associate Professor of Political Science David White when she took his Introduction to U.S. Government class during the Spring 2007 semester.

“Nadiyah was the student who took my suggestion to get involved with a presidential campaign most to heart,” White said. “Her political effort on behalf of Senator Obama during the presidential primary campaign and her academic effort in my class made me realize that she was the perfect candidate for a DNC internship.”

White assisted Batiste in obtaining both the internship and funding to help offset travel and living costs associated with her internship.

Batiste is the daughter of Tia and Tony Winston, both captains in the U.S. Army stationed in Ft. Hood, Texas.
