FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University men’s and women’s basketball teams will play host to Georgia College & State University for a key Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on Saturday (Feb. 23).
The women’s game will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. in the Smith University Center, followed by the men’s contest at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for students.
Both contests can be heard on the radio at 100.1 FM The FAN with Allen Smothers handling the play-by-play.
The video/audio broadcast of the doubleheader will also be available on the internet. The feed, produced through Penn Atlantic Inc., can be purchased at http://www.peachbeltsports.tv/. Viewers must set up an account prior to viewing, and each game is purchased separately.
The 23rd-ranked Patriot women (19-5, 12-5) continue to occupy first place in the PBC standings, and now hold a full-game lead over four squads tied for second place – with three games left to play in the regular season. FMU will be looking for its first 20-win season since 2000-01. GC&SU (12-12, 7-10) handed the Patriot women one of their five losses, 90-84 on Jan. 19 on the Lady Bobcats’ home floor. With that win, GC&SU leads the all-time series 15-14.
FMU continues to lead the nation in scoring offense (92.5 points per game), despite the fact its leading scorer Brittany Young is only averaging 13.8 ppg. Six other Patriots are scoring between 8.8 and 12.5 ppg.
The Francis Marion men (10-14, 4-13) will be looking for their third straight home win, while GC&SU (17-7, 11-6) is third in the PBC standings. The Bobcats defeated the Patriots 66-40 in their earlier meeting to increase their all-time series lead to 21-6.
Juniors Houston Power (11.5 ppg) and Sam Smith (10.0 ppg, 4.2 rpg) lead the FMU attack.
Both Francis Marion squads will close out their regular-season schedules next week at Armstrong Atlantic State University on Feb. 27 and at home against Clayton State University for Homecoming on March 1.
