FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University juniors David Walters and Shannan Tyson have garnered weekly awards from the Peach Belt Conference for the week of Feb. 25-March 2. Walters has been selected as the baseball “Pitcher of the Week,” while Tyson was named the women’s softball “Player of the Week.”
A right-hander, Walters tossed a complete-game five-hitter in an 11-2 win over eighth-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University last Friday. He struck out 11 batters and allowed only one walk and one earned run.
In the process, the River Hill, Md., native upped his season record to 6-0 and lowered his earned run average to 1.32. He has fanned 45 batters in 41 innings and allowed only 20 hits.
Walters is a former All-County performer at River Hill High School, and was a 2006 All-Region pick at Spartanburg Methodist College.
Tyson, a native of Seminole, Fla., batted .563 last week in four games and extended her hitting streak to 15 games. She scored seven runs and drove in three runs as the Patriots swept a pair of doubleheaders.
For the season, she is hitting a team-leading .455 with 23 runs scored, nine doubles, one home run, and 14 RBIs in 20 games.
Tyson is a former All-Pinellas County Athletic Conference and All-Suncoast Team selection at Seminole High School.
Weather permitting, both FMU teams will return to action on Tuesday. The seventh-ranked Patriot baseball team (16-4 record) will host top-ranked Mount OIive College at 3 p.m., while the 16-4 Patriot softball team will play a PBC doubleheader at Lander University beginning at 2 p.m.
