Patriot sports notes on Monday

The women’s tennis match between 10th-ranked Francis Marion University (17-0) and eighth-ranked Clayton State University (15-1) was postponed by rain on Sunday and has been rescheduled for Monday, April 14, at 1 p.m. on FMU’s Kassab Courts.

The Francis Marion baseball team’s come-from-behind 9-8 win over North Georgia College & State University on Sunday was the 900th win in the 36-year history of the program. The team’s first win was a 6-5 victory over Pfeiffer College on March 12, 1973.  The Patriots’ all-time record now stands at 900-589-2.

The Patriot baseball team moved up four spots to 23rd in this week’s Collegiate Baseball Magazine NCAA Division II Top 30 poll released on Monday (March 31). Dating back to the 2005 season, the Patriots have now appeared in 59 consecutive national polls

FMU has only two home sporting events this week. The Patriot baseball team will play host to Georgia College & State University for a key three-game PBC series with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.

FMU senior runner Codi Knoch set a school-record for the women’s 3,000-meter run at the recent Shamrock Invitational Track and Field Meet hosted by Coastal Carolina University. She finished with a time of 11:17.74, besting the previous mark of 11:26.50 set by Emily Owens in 1996. Knock also owns the school record in the 5,000-meter run.

FMU softball pitcher Michaela Wolf defeated USC Aiken 8-0 on Saturday to become the first pitcher in the program’s history to have two 20-win seasons. The sophomore southpaw was 21-10 as a freshman and has a 20-5 mark this season.

FMU senior shortstop Greg Phelps owns a nine-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 35 of 38 games this year. This season, he hit in the opening 26 games (34 altogether including eight games at the end of the 2007 season), then went hitless (0-for-11) in a three-game series with Lander University, and has now hit in nine straight.
