WHAT: Francis Marion University will break ground on its Performing Arts Center. The center will be located on 4.5 acres of land at the corner of Dargan and West Palmetto and used for performances, programs and exhibits. The facility will also include instructional space for use by the university’s fine arts program. National traveling music, dance and theater productions will perform at the center as well. Construction is expected to be complete in the fall of 2010.
Scheduled speakers include FMU President Fred Carter, Project Architect Malcolm Holzman of New York-based Holzman-Moss Architects, Dr. C. Edward Floyd of the Drs. Bruce & Lee Foundation, Sen. Hugh L. Leatherman Sr., chairman of the S.C. Senate Finance Committee and the Honorable Stephen J. Wukela, Mayor of the City of Florence.

WHERE: Downtown site at the corner of Dargan and West Palmetto streets
VISUALS/INTERVIEWS: Visuals include architectural renderings and groundbreaking ceremony. FMU officials, members of the Board of Trustees and others will be available for interviews. In case of rain, the ceremony will be held in the St. John’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall on Dargan Street.
