Patriots entertain Lakers for basketball DH on Saturday
FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University men’s and women’s basketball teams will play host to Clayton State University for a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 24), including a battle for first place in the women’s PBC standings.
The twinbill will tip-off with the women’s game at 2 p.m. in the Smith University Center, followed by the men’s contest at 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for students.
Both games will be aired on WWFN-FM 100.1 The Fan and carried live on Time Warner Cable channel 11 in Florence.
The women’s contest will pit the first-place Patriots (13-1, 6-1) against the 24th-ranked and second-place Clayton State Women (12-3, 6-2). Francis Marion has won all eight of its home games this season, and leads the all-time series 11-9. However, Clayton State did knock FMU out of the NCAA Tournament last March in the most recent meeting.
Junior guard Shana Franks and sophomore forward Shannon Singleton-Bates lead the Patriots in scoring with averages of 15.9 and 13.9 points per game respectively, as the squad continues to lead the nation in scoring offense.
The Francis Marion men (10-4, 3-4) will be looking to snap a two-game slide when they take the floor against the Lakers (10-5, 3-5). Clayton State leads the all-time men’s series 10-6, but Francis Marion won the last meeting in February 2008, and the Lakers have not won in Florence since March 2003.
Senior forward Sam Smith paces three Patriots in double figures with an 11.1 ppg average.
