FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University men’s and women’s basketball teams will play host to Georgia College & State University for a key Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 17).
The doubleheader will tip-off with the women’s game at 2 p.m. in the Smith University Center, followed by the men’s contest at 4 p.m.
Both games will be broadcast on WWFN-FM 100.1 The Fan, and carried live on Time Warner Cable channel 11 in Florence.
The FMU Women are 11-1 overall, including 7-0 at home, and in third place in the Peach Belt standings with a 4-1 mark, one game behind Clayton State University. GCSU (8-4, 3-2) is tied for fifth place, one game behind the Patriots.
The all-time women’s series is knotted at 15-15, and the two squads split last year’s two games with each team winning on its home floor.
Junior guard Shana Franks and sophomore forward Shannon Singleton-Bates continue to lead the Patriots in scoring with averages of 15.8 and 14.7 points per game respectively. Senior guard Jennifer Dyer is averaging 11.6 ppg and is now within 29 points of reaching the 1,000-mark for her career.
The Patriot men (10-2, 3-2) will be looking for their first win over GCSU in Florence since 1999. The Patriots and Bobcats (9-2, 3-2) are tied for fourth place in the PBC, 1.5 games behind conference-leading Augusta State University.
GCSU leads the all-time men’s series 22-6 and has won the last six meetings.
Senior forward Sam Smith and his 12.4 ppg average leads four Patriots scoring in double figures.
