FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University women’s basketball team is ranked 14th in the final 2009 USA Today ESPN Division II Top 25 poll.
This marks the first time the Patriot program has appeared in a season-ending poll since the 2000-01 campaign when Francis Marion was ranked 10th.
Under the direction of Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year Heather Macy, Francis Marion posted a 27-5 record, won its second straight PBC championship, and earned a second consecutive NCAA Tournament invitation. The Patriots won two games in the Southeast Regional in Hickory, N.C., and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the fifth time in team history.
The Patriots completed their non-conference slate 7-0 and won their opening nine games. After a road loss to a nationally ranked opponent, FMU then put together a 15-game winning streak (longest in 10 seasons) and reached 24-1, while being ranked seventh in the nation and receiving one first-place vote.
FMU appeared in the final eight national polls of the 2008-09 season, with that No. 7 ranking being the squad’s highest of the year, and the highest for the program since the Patriots were ranked seventh in the 1999-2000 pre-season poll.
Francis Marion loses six seniors off this year’s roster, only one of whom was a starter.
