FLORENCE, S.C. – The Francis Marion University men’s basketball team finished this past season among the national leaders in several defensive categories according to the end-of-the-season NCAA Division II statistical report. Several Patriot players were also listed in the final 2008-09 statistical report.
The Patriots, in their third year under head coach Gary Edwards, posted a 16-12 record and tied for fifth during the Peach Belt Conference regular season.
Francis Marion ranked 18th nationally in team field goal percentage defense, allowing opponents to shoot only 40.1 percent from the field. FMU also ranked 36th in three-point field goal percentage defense (31.3%), 37th in assists per game (16.5 per game), 45th in rebounding margin (+5.2 per game), 82nd in assist/turnover ratio (+1.03), and 84th in team scoring defense (allowing only 68.6 ppg).
Approximately 270 schools sponsor Division II men’s basketball programs.
Individually, senior point guard Crayton Jones ranked 71st nationally in assists per game with a 4.4 per game average. Senior forward Kevin Clark ranked 85th in blocked shots per game at 1.4 per contest, and junior guard Anthony Wallen ranked 85th in three-point field goals made per game at 2.4 per game.
