Cantey and Pickett named FMU’s 2009 Outstanding Employees


FLORENCE – Angela Cantey of Mullins and John Pickett of Florence, have been named outstanding staff employees of the year at Francis Marion University.

The awards were presented July 14 during the staff awards luncheon, which also honored FMU employees for length of state service.  

Cantey is an administrative assistant for the Department of Biology and Pickett is an estate groundskeeper for grounds maintenance. 

Cantey has been employed at FMU for 22 years and Pickett for 14 years. They both were cited for their dedication to their jobs and for service above and beyond the call of duty. FMU President Fred Carter presented Cantey and Pickett with plaques and $1,000 checks in recognition of winning this annual award for FMU employees. Florence Mayor Steven Wukela was the guest speaker.  

Kenneth J. Pittman of Florence, police lieutenant; and Marion L. Webb of Florence, athletic trainer, were cited for 30 years of state service. 

Employees honored for 20 years of service include: Dean W. Blackburn of Hartsville, coordinator of the university center; Brenda B. Calcutt of Pamplico, senior library technical assistant for reference; Carl E. Capps Jr., of Quinby, psychology lab manager; Rebecca M. Culbertson of Florence, coordinator of benefits; Judy B. Gasque of Florence, help desk coordinator; Diana L. Gibson of Florence, administrative associate in the School of Education; Elizabeth B. Jackson of Florence, senior cook; Thomas W. Lewis of Florence, craftsman supervisor/locksmith; Mitchell Pressley of Florence, superintendent of custodial services; Damon L. Runion of Lake City, supervisor of academic and support buildings/zone maintenance; and Christina M. Scott of Florence, senior cook.

Employees recognized for 10 years of service were: Marion L. Atkinson of Marion, special trades supervisor; Howard V. Brown Jr., of Bennettsville, director of user services; Randolph Brown of Florence, maintenance assistant; Dominic J. Davis of Darlington, senior library technical assistant/electronic services officer; Arthur H. Inabinet of Florence, men’s baseball coach; H. Phillip Lynch of Florence, estate groundskeeper; Mary A. Mabe-Kulesa of Florence, administrative associate in the School of Education; H. Jane Madden of Florence, director of grants development program; Claretha M. McCall of Florence, custodian; Janet M. Pearson of Lane, senior library technical assistant for acquisitions; Cecilia U. Smith of Florence, coordinator of student health services; Janice S. Smith of Darlington, administrative assistant for career development; J. Keith Stapleton of Latta, police officer; Cheryl R. Tuttle of Florence, director of housing; and Ronnie Woodberry of Pamplico, custodian.

Eight employees who are retiring from FMU were also recognized – Frank A. Braddock of Effingham, director of facilities services; Robert B. Brown of Marion, estate groundskeeper; Elizabeth I. Cooper of Florence, vice president for public and community affairs; Ronald P. Flowers of Hartsville, director of purchasing; H. Phillip Lynch of Florence, estate groundskeeper; Ronlena A. McClester of Florence, administrative assistant for student affairs; Melvin T. Roberts of Florence, supervisor of custodial services; and Patsy J. Sauls of Florence, servers and systems specialist.
