FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University will kick off the 2009-10 basketball season on Wednesday (Nov. 18) with its Riot at the Rim event sponsored by Chick-Fil-A and Sodexho as the Patriots play their first home doubleheader of the season.
The Patriot Women will play Fayetteville State University at 5:30 p.m. in the Smith University Center, followed the FMU Men hosting Carver Bible College at 7:30 p.m. General admission is $5 for adults and $2 for students. However, admission will be free to those donating two canned goods. Those donations will go to the Harvest Hope Food Bank.
Chick-Fil-A, located at Southside Commons on South Irby Street, will present the first 200 fans with a coupon for a free biscuit, in addition to other giveaways and an appearance by one of the Chick-Fil-A cows.
The evening’s festivities will begin at 4:30 p.m. on the lawn in front of the Smith University Center. The pre-game events will include music, contests, door prizes, and an opportunity to hear from both Francis Marion head coaches.
“As is our annual effort, we want this year’s Riot at the Rim to includes the community, our alumni, Swamp Fox Club supporters, student-athletes, faculty, staff, and student groups,” said FMU athletic director Murray Hartzler. “This is one of only two home doubleheaders this semester and we want everyone to come out and see the 2009-10 editions of the Patriots.”
The women’s team will actually open its season at home on Sunday (Nov. 15) with a 2 p.m. contest against Converse College. The Patriot Men open their season on the road in Florida, Sunday and Monday, at Florida Tech’s Tip-Off Classic.
