Statue raised to honor FMU founders

FLORENCE – As part of the celebration of the approaching 40th anniversary of Francis Marion University, a bronze life-sized standing figure depicting Gen. Francis Marion as he speaks to his troops has been raised. Inscribed on two plaques at the base of the statue are the names of the founding faculty and staff as well as the members of the Pee Dee legislative delegation who were instrumental in the university’s creation.

Sculpted by the nationally recognized Garland Weeks of Lubbock, Texas, the statue of the general is 5’8” tall. The height from the top of the flag pole to the base is 8’3”.

"This statue provides us a splendid opportunity to honor the founding faculty and staff of this university,” said FMU President Luther F. Carter. "These men and women started this university in 1970, and this statue will honor their contribution in perpetuity."

The statue of the general stands in the center of the university’s circular entrance near Lee Nursing Building as a signpost for all who visit the campus.

The base of the statue was created and placed on site by the Gilbert Construction Company.
