FLORENCE, S.C. – With the opening game of the 2010 baseball season less than three weeks away, Francis Marion University learned on Friday that the Patriots have earned their second preseason national ranking. FMU is listed eighth in the Ping!Baseball Division II 2010 Preseason Top 30 poll.
Earlier this month, FMU was listed 12th in the preseason Collegiate Baseball Newspaper NCAA Division II Top 40 poll.
The Patriots finished 2009 with a 38-15-1 record, placed second during the Peach Belt Conference regular season and won the PBC Tournament, and earned the team’s fourth NCAA Division II national tournament bid in the past seven years, placing third at the Southeast Regional.
The Patriots return 21 lettermen, including six position starters, the designated hitter, and 12 of 15 pitchers, from that squad.
The University of California-San Diego is ranked No. 1 in the poll.
The Patriots will open their 2010 campaign on Feb. 2 with an afternoon road game at Barton College.
