Patriot Women remain 15th in Hoops polls

FLORENCE, SC – Despite a pair of conference wins by double-figure margins, the Francis Marion University women’s basketball team remained tied for 15th in this week’s USA TODAY ESPN Division II Top 25 coaches’ poll released on Tuesday (Feb. 9). Both FMU basketball teams will play a key Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at North Georgia College & State University in Dahlonega, Ga., on Wednesday evening.

The women’s game will tip-off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s contest at 7:30 p.m. Follow all the action and results of the twinbill through the FMU athletics website at

The Francis Marion women have won their last nine games to run their overall record to 19-2. The Patriots are second in the PBC’s East Division with an 11-1 mark. Against the Lady Saints on Wednesday, FMU will be chasing its 20th win, an occurrence that has happened an amazing 21 times in 35 previous seasons.

After being unranked in the 2009-10 preseason poll, Francis Marion has appeared in each of the 10 regular-season polls at 22nd, 18th, 17th, 17th, 15th, 18th, 17th, 17th, 15th, and again 15th. Unbeaten Franklin Pierce University (21-0) maintains its hold on the No.1 spot in the poll for a sixth straight week. Three PBC schools are in this week’s poll and one is among the other schools receiving votes.

The North Georgia women’s team is 9-11 overall and 4-7 in the PBC.

The Francis Marion (16-5, 8-4) will be looking to snap a two-game skid on Wednesday. The Patriots are second in the PBC’s East Division, while the Saints (12-9, 7-4) are third in the West Division.

The Patriots will play host to Clayton State University on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m.
