Busy weekend for Patriot spring sports teams


FLORENCE, S.C. – Four of the Francis Marion University spring sports teams – baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s tennis – will be in action at home this weekend (March 6-7).

The second-ranked FMU baseball team (12-2) will open Peach Belt Conference play with a three-game series against USC Aiken (9-6). The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m. General admission is $5 for adults and $2 for students.  FMU students are admitted free with ID.

The Patriot softball team (11-5) will entertain the nation’s top-ranked team in the North Georgia College & State University Saints (13-0) for a PBC twinbill on Saturday at 1 p.m. FMU will also play host to Lander University for a PBC doubleheader on Sunday at noon.

The fourth-ranked Francis Marion women’s tennis team and the 15th-ranked men’s tennis team will play host to Tusculum College on Saturday at 2 p.m. on the Kassab Courts. The Patriot tennis squads will conclude their weekend by traveling to Sumter’s Palmetto Tennis Center on Sunday to play national-power Lynn University at 10 a.m. The Lynn women are ranked No.1 in the most recent poll, while the men are third.

The Francis Marion men’s golf team will take part in its second tournament of the spring season, Monday and Tuesday at the 13th-annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate. The tournament will be played at Aiken’s historic Palmetto Golf Club and the field includes Akron, Clemson, Charleston Southern, Chattanooga, College of Charleston, East Carolina, Elon, Francis Marion, Furman, Georgia Southern, Liberty, Mercer, Presbyterian, UNC Wilmington, USC Aiken, Winthrop, Wofford, and Virginia.
